Two questions.....
1.How far forward should a red dot be mounted on my Sport. From what I see, most people have it just above the mag well.
2.How close should the iron sight be mounted to the red dot. As close as possible?? Or is everything dependent on each individual. BTW. I have a slight astigmatism making the dot somewhat distorted.

1. I place the red dot as far up on the receiver as I can get.

2. I place the rear iron sight as far back on the receiver.

Yep... The placement of the red dot is personal preference, but I prefer it as far forward on the receiver as it can go. You will want the rear sight as far back on the receiver as it can go so that you can maximize your sight radius.

Putting it further forward helps with speed of alignment. It increases the distance from your eye which requires a more precise alignment. This will lead to a more consistent mount, which in turn makes for a better shooter.

The location of the iron sight is not related to the optic at all. The front and rear sights are only related to each other. Thus, you want the rear as far away from the front as possible. As has been said, this gives a larger sight radius which makes for a more precise sighting system.

One more thing. The optic/sights need to be mounted as solidly as possible. So while having the optic far forward is good for sighting purposes, too far forward can make for an unstable mount. This is why most recommend it be mounted on the receiver. Like this:

Notice that the EOTech is as far forward as possible without going onto the forearm. The rear sight is in the most rearward slot of the picatinny rail.

The EOTech could feasibly go forward a little more, but it's comfortable in this location. Because the forearm is a free float, it could even be mounted on the forearm, but that is not optimal.
