Moving sucks

Nothing like loading, then unloading, reloading to get the right boxes to the front of the trailer and the heavier ones low. Good help is hard to find! Off to the Florida panhandle Friday. Then unload and move in. I won’t now where anything is for weeks. I need some ammo reloading time instead. Good to vent a little though. Need me some range time with my model 19.


Got my MIL RV started to Florida today. Professional transporter so at least I’ll not looking at the windshield yet. Tires too old to take a chance on so, new shoes on her rig. While I have easy access I figured I’d add a little grease to the bearings. Took a cartridge and half the second one. Guess eighty seven year old ladies aren’t long on maintenance. Maybe I’m off setting some karma from early in my youth though. Think positive

I have heard it is not fun. I moved into the house I live in now when I got married the first time back in 1979 at age 21. We didn't really own anything so I don't think it was really moving.

"Moving sucks"

Yeah I'm about 4 weeks away from going through it. But I have been trying to get ready for it for 3 months. I'll be draggin' 41 years worth of "stuff" from near the bottom of Texas to near the top.

I thought I was done moving when I lit here. But this is for sure the last time and every one that knows me knows that it is carved in stone.

I never thought much about it but now I'm painfully aware that old people should never have to move. Especially after so long in one place.

I've forgotten how many times weve moved. Need to write it down.
Moved primary residence 4x since marriage.
Brooklyn NY, Nassau NY, Suffolk NY, Greenville SC.
Created temporary secondary residence 21x for assignments, in 18 places, three of them twice.

We had a dedicated truck and cargo trailer to aid moving to:

1. ME
2. MA 2x
3. PA
4. NY (temp. upstate)
5. NJ
6. VA
7. NC 2x
8. SC 2x
9. GA
10. FL
11. MI
12. OH
13. TN
14. IA
15. WA
16. CA
17. Switzerland
18. France

I think that's all.
So 25 moves total, from marriage through retirement.

And since we're "pros" at moving, we've done favor moves another half dozen times.

So 24 moves total, from marriage through retirement....

I get 19, counting from my first marriage, and 28 counting from when I first showed up in Washington, DC, in 1952.

Hong Kong, US (VA, NY, HI, OR) Germany and Japan. I’m counting four moves within Germany (when I was a child) and seven within Japan (as an adult).

Of course, there’s a big difference between moving when you’re 18 and have all your stuff in a backpack, and moving after you’ve retired and you need a couple of trucks and a crew of movers.

I rue the thought of moving and have no plans to do so, I have been in my house for 31 years. My wife and I raised our family here and now the children have moved away, but still close, and my wife is gone. It is just myself and my dog in a ridiculously large home but I love my location and have no plan to leave. I have been making an effort to reduce my accumulations with some small success. Every time my children visit I try to get them to take a few things warning them they will have to deal with it eventually. A couple of views from my deck that makes me want to stay here.

I was in 3 different schools when I was in 3rd grade. Maybe that's why I'm so stodgy and settled in now. I stayed in my "starter" home for 19 years and now I have been in my semi-custom retirement home, which I helped design, for 14 1/2 years. I tell everybody that the only way I'm leaving this house is either in a straight jacket or feet first.

My wife and I, both in our 60's and newlyweds since 2015 bought another house at the end of March. We were living in my home of 23 years.

My wife sold her house about 3 years ago, and she had a LOT of stuff in storage.

We had some renovations done and started gradually moving stuff in around mid July. We spent our first night here Labor Day weekend.

My wife filled the house and half the basement with "Stuff." I brought my gunsafe, it's contents, my loading equipment, bourbon, tractor and a few changes of clothes.

I asked my wife, what are you ever going to do with all this stuff that's never used? Bad thing!

Her children couldn't care less about 90% of it. I've found most women get attached to things and have a much harder time letting it go.

With some exception of course, if I ain't needed in the last 4 or 5 years, I don't need it at all! I'd rather give it away to someone that can and will use it than see it waste away in my closet, garage, etc.

Moving does indeed suck!

No kidding; moving is a big PITA We moved 6 times, all in the same area. My old frat brother who finally retired to Komifornia moved 17 times, all over the country, as an engineer for Trane.

Yeah my parents tell of moving 5 places before I was 5 years old.
Then I went to 7 different grade schools and 2 different high schools. Seemed like I was the new kid almost every year! Not counting college residences, I had 5 addresses in first 5 years of marriage. When you're young, it's more of an adventure than a chore, but eventually it switches. We finally found a nice 4 bedroom in a nice rural town and spent the next 40 years at the same address.

But, this spring Life threw a curve ball, we are now in a ground floor no steps tiny apartment as I learn to walk again.... sheesh... then we'll be moving again...

Mom and Dad kept going also, had 12 more addresses after I married.

Only one military address, Dad was in Norfolk when I was born, was discharged shortly after. I tried 3 times but couldn't serve.
