MP 15-22, a good buy?

So I already got some bad news, and I didn't even fire the rifle yet. I actually learned at all public ranges in the state of Pennsylvania you can only fire 3 rounds at a time. Meaning I can have no more than 3 rounds in the magazine at once. Now this stupid rule has ruined any enjoyment I can have with this rifle. I never planned on spraying with the rifle but any fun I can have using this rifle will be ruined by constantly having to reload the clip.

What the heck?! How would such a ludicrous law/rule come to be?

I know I couldn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. It seems like up here they only cater to people who hunt with their rifles. The states reasoning seems to be if you have a 25 round clip you will hog the lane, cause too much damage, and distract the real hunters from adjusting the sights on their rifles. Right now I am having so much trouble finding a decent private rifle range. I found one that seems fairly decent but most of the rest seem to be indoor pistol ranges.

A rifle can be shot in a indoor range. I think the only caliber not allowed at the range I go to is the 50 cal, because it would go through the back wall of the range. The club I'm looking at joining is all outdoor and allows up to 50 cal.

Yeah they have a pistol club in my area with an indoor range, I wonder if they would let me shoot there?

I think I will try a private range. This range I was talking about is a state ran range, I can go to a private range and not have to put up with this BS. I found one range about 30 miles from me and thats the one I will try. Hopefully admission isn't expensive.

I don't want to sell this rifle just for some stupid law.

We have a few private and public ranges in my neck of the woods. Public ranges make me nervous. With private ranges, the higher the admission the less nervous I am.

Usually, indoor pistol ranges are not the best place for rifles. At an indoor pistol range, shooting stations are typically not designed to lay a rifle down with gear. This creates an environment where there's more movement between the shooting station and gear benches...or using the floor.... which creates all sorts of potential safety issues. There's a private indoor pistol range close to my home. The opertor allows folks to shoot rifles at his pistol stations. I will not go there.

Just my 2 cents.

I understand what you mean, and I have no problem paying for access. However I don't want to spend a fortune. Here is an example. In my area we have an outdoor range with plinking, target shooting, trap shooting, and they even have semi-auto military weapons to fire (For a fee). They charge $35 the first time you visit for a standard safety class, but for every visit afterwards they only charge you $10 for the whole day. This is a reasonable price.

Another example is this indoor range I found. Looks like a really nice place but they charge $18/hour. Thats right an hour. The worst part? For every additional person they charge you an extra $9. Now thats robbery. Even though it's an indoor range they allow you to fire .22 caliber rifles or carbine rifles that use pistol ammo. So you can't go firing off .223's or 30-06's.

Right now I am happy to report that the first place I mentioned will allow me to fire the gun as I please, as long as I don't fire the gun like Rambo (Rapid Fire). I can load the clip to 25 rounds, use my own targets, and they only charge me $10 for the whole day. Hopefully I like this range. I have a few other options to check out if it's not good. Come this Friday I will post a report from the range, I look forward to firing my M&P 15-22 as the designers intended. :D

glad you found a place, 10 dollars is what the charge at a local gun range here. So thats not bad at all. Hope you like it.

The local range is alot like that ,from what ive seen of there website, ours lets you rent automatic rifles etc, i think, Ive seen some of there vids, pretty coool. Good luck.

Yeah they only rent semi-auto military rifles (AR-15, AK-47, M1 Garand). They even have Desert Eagles (.44 mag). I think you can fire one clip for like $8. I might want to try one of those bad boys. :D

Sounds like a good place to shoot.

Maybe some of the shooters there will be able to tell you the difference between a clip and a magazine. :p

No matter how hard I try I keep calling magazines clips, *** is wrong with me.

dont worry to much about it,lol. When i first got my 15-22 i called them clips too. I posted something on a youtube vid, and a guy said something like ,maybe cause its a magazine, not a clip...

After that, i started to call it what it is.

Damn maybe it's some type of disorder? Maybe we should form a group that focuses on curing this disorder. :D

So I made it to the range, bad news.

So here goes. Today I went to two ranges to fire my M&P 15-22 and for awhile I was having real fun firing this rifle. The first range I went to was the PA gaming range, so I could only load 3 rounds at a time. It was me, my father, and my fathers friend who is a bit of an expert in firearms. I wanted to fire the rifle first with the friend just to be sure I was handling the rifle properly and to see if the rifles sights were ok.

So we were at the range for maybe an hour. My father friend was there to test out his hunting rifles. We set up targets at 100 yards and fired 3 rounds at a time. I barely hit the target. Out of 40 rounds fired between my father and me we only got maybe 10 hits. At 100 yards we could barely see the target and this is the first firearm we ever owned so we have little experience. Out of these 40 rounds fired we had one failure to fire. We didn't think much of it. I pulled the charging handle, ejected the round, and kept going.

After this we starting taking shots on the 50 yard range. Here we did much better. Out of 50 shots we got maybe 25 on target. We noticed though on all the shots they were hitting low. Our friend adjusted the sights and we had some improvement. So after shooting these rounds we wrapped things up and headed home. At this point we shot about 80-90 rounds with just one failure to fire.

Later in the day we decided to check out the Sunset Hill Shooting Range. We took the mandatory safety class which costed $35/person. This was a one time fee so we didn't complain. After that it was only $10 per visit for the whole day. So after we passed the safety classes we began shooting.

My father rented a spotting scope (Only $1 for the whole day) and I began firing. This range was about 30 yards and I was doing good. I fired about 15 rounds and I got most of them on target, at this point I was really having a good time. Then it happened, I had my first failure to extract. The .22 round got stuck in the ejection port. I ejected the round by pulling the charging handle and continued to fire. I shot another 10 rounds then I had another bullet stuck in the ejection port. When I locked the bolt open I saw one of the rounds got stuck in the bore. I asked the guy who gave the safety class if I was seeing this right and he said yes, he got a ram rod and cleared the round.

Once the round was cleared I reloaded the clip and tried again. At this point the gun was failing to extract the bullet after maybe 6 shots. When all was said and done we fired the rifle another 50 times with constant failures (After 5-6 rounds) to extract after the first 15 rounds. So I am taking back to the store and I guess they will send it back to S&W for repairs.

I'm not really mad just disappointed. I called S&W just to see when my rifle was manufactured and it was made in July 2009, so I see I was given one of the older rifles. I just hope they fix it fast, get it back to me, and it works properly when I take it to the range. Until then I will need some emotional support. :o

Oh and when we fired the rifle for the last 50 shots we noticed the rifle was still shooting low, we will raise the sights another notch when we get it back.

You guys gonna form a "clip" support group?:p

maybe right a book entitled: 'Correct AR Rifle Terms for Dummies' lol.

Ok I am in. :D
