I load .357 mag with three 55 grains jacketed pellets (flush) and shooting the cartridge with am average speed of 1.100 - 1.150 fps result is a triangle equilateral formed by the holes with each side 5,5 - 6" at 15 meters. At 7 meters, each side has 3 inches. Do you think it is a good defensive cartridge?

depends on what you havnt researched yet ... penetration
think any of em will get to the vitals for some organ grinding?
answer that with penetration testing and you have your answer

No.

It's like the "new and improved" 410 shot shells they make now for the Judge and Governor. The have several discs and pellets.

Why??? A 250 gr 45 Colt bullet is a lot better SD round than anything you can do with a 410 shot shell.

So I vote No also.

No.
Learn to hit what you're shooting at.
Some think the spread will magically compensate for poor shooting, but it only makes it easier to miss.

There was a thread just talking about the old Remington .357 Multiball load. I'm guessing this is a handload of the same thing but with three balls. I don't think you are going to have enough case volume for powder to really push the projectiles fast enough for a meaningful SD type load. I have no doubt it will ruin a BG's day, but I would reserve loads like these for maybe small game hunting or just reload tinkering. Besides, even if the bullets were alox coated I bet they lead the barrel pretty bad.

Multi projectile loads in the .357 mag have been sold commercially but they haven't survived the test of market demand. I would guess they did not much better than any other single bullet load and worse than some.

I have no doubt your load would be lethal and under the right circumstances work fine for SD. There is likely a relatively short range limitation from projectile spread and velocity loss due to uneven shape and probably tumbling. There is also a danger of unintentional collateral damage from multiple projectiles.

While one can plan on only needing a 30 ft or less defensive load everyone knows that the plan doesn't always develop as one anticipates. Personally I'd stick with a good time tested 125 gr JHP in the .357 mag with its proven effectiveness over a greater range of distance.

Tks for your interest... and they do not lead the barrel

The multiple bullets are jacketed with 22 lr fired cases . Joining them you can make bullets too

Under some admittedly limited circumstances I believe that you could adequately defend yourself with this load type.

But you didn't say against what sort of threat.

Your loads at 1,100 FPS are only 225 FPS slower than the typical 9 pellet Remington 12 Gauge 00 buck load out of a 2 3/4" shell.

I've done some tinkering with multi-ball handloads in a .32 S&W Long revolver and I wouldn't hesitate to use it on medium sized varmits at close range where I would be concerned with noise, over penetration or richochet....
