Multiple Jams

I went to the range yesterday with a bulk box of Federal Copper Hollow Point's and had multiple jams. By jams I mean the bullet didn't slide up the feed ramp properly and the bolt would not close. I've shot this ammo before with no problem. A couple of times the bullet actually bent sideways after jamming.

I think it may be because I didn't load the magazine properly. usually I load slow and meticulously but this time if they went in I was satisfied with that.

Is this the issue or is can there be something else?

95 percent of such feeding problems are directly related to magazine loading technique. Since you changed the way you loaded the magazines and then had problems, that's the obvious answer.

What Worked for Me.

I "smoothed" them with light pressure from a dremel tool to ensured smooth surfaces in and out (the rounds were properly loaded as well). I have had ZERO issues and smooth feeding and since then (600-750 rounds so far).

FWIW, I found Aquila Super Extra HV 40gr Solid Point Copper Coated Bullet work best for me. Tight groups and smooth operation is my norm now. They are about $.054 (delivered) a shot. I'm a happy camper now.

Interesting ...

16 magazines here and not the first feeding problem. The only thing I do to the magazines is wipe the inside of the feed lips with a wool mop to remove powder residue.

I'll take some pictures (tomorrow I hope). Basically, I think what I've done is smoothed the "manufacturing" edges a bit - would happen with use I suppose anyhow - so the rounds slide smoothly from the magazine. I have been very careful not to disturb the opening dimensions rather to only smooth them. Anything my finger nails could feel as rough or jagged was made smooth. I also nylon brushed the openings to free them of any residue. This last time out purposely didn't clean the ejector, extractor, bold, breach, or ramp areas to see if that mattered. It didn't. The clean and smooth magazines fed the weapon smoothly and without problems - consistent symphony of "crack! and click!" bolt operations.

Metallic magazines would have been nice to experiment with, though cost I'm sure would have risen.

This wonderful, educating, and fun little rifle has caused me to be seriously pursuing a "grown-up" AR 15. I'm really torn between the M&P15T (811041 or a Rock River Arms RRA AR1250). The "Walter Mitty" in me sees myself as dauntless commando or the field of battle ... on range anyway!

Both weapons seem to be made quite well. And I'm geniunely thrilled to be learning so much here from so many knowable and deicated folks. Thanks!!

I dont get it?!?! Whats the difference between slow and fast. Bullets will only go down if loaded correctly. I dont even look at them ehen loading. Just pop one in after another while watching tv.

As mentioned this was very frustrating for me as I had similar problems with my M&P 15-22 - lots of jams, FTE, and FTF - until I made certain the "feeding end" of the magazines were smooth and clean. I "smoothed" them with light pressure from a dremel tool (PLASTIC BRUSH) to ensured smooth surfaces in and out (the rounds were properly loaded as well). I have had ZERO issues and smooth feeding and since then (600-750 rounds so far).

Be VERY Careful NOT to re-contour any edges - especially the portion that "grips" to rear of the round.
S-m-o-o-t-h is the goal and of course a decent cleaning of the area. After the "smoothing" has taken place (and it should be a ONE time process) , then cleaning is only a wool mop/nylon brush/blow/wipe easy-peezy routine to do. Hope pictures help you.

Edited to say: We should all be able to load up our 15-22's favorite ammo and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy without these wretched distractions. I'm here to relax - not to get frustrated!

I believe the problems come up if the cartridges do not stagger when loading the mags, I have had this happen & it is the only time I've had any FTF problems so I try to keep an eye on them when I load the mags
