We greatly enjoy film scores and have a very large collection of DVDs. We want the score to sound like it does in the theater, so we have a large and powerful stereo system.
My favorite film genre is westerns, so that is where most of my favorites are. My absolute favorite film and score is 'The Magnificent Seven'. A number of posters have already listed others that are also among my favorites. Not surprising since there are so many great ones extant.
So here are (what I think are) some original contributions to the thread:
'Sunset'. Great score that sounds like a western score should sound (at least to me). Mancini at his best. This is a story of Wyatt Earp and Tom Mix teaming up to nail some bad guys. Everything in it is true - give or take a lie or two.
'Grand Prix'. Maurice Jarre's score perfectly matches the amazing footage Frankenheimer captured in a film about Formula One racing that I doubt will ever be equaled.
'The Horse Soldiers'. Title song composed by Stan Jones, perhaps better known for having written 'Ghost Riders in the Sky'. Very catchy tune that ties in perfectly with the otherwise period correct music score. This seems to be one of the lesser known and regarded Pappy Ford and the Duke films, but I really enjoy it since I am interested in the Civil War. The film is based on an actual incident.
Since I was in LE, I have to throw in my favorite cop show and cop show score - 'Police Story'. I was on night patrol during the years this series was on. Actually I worked nights until I promoted out of any ranks that worked nights because that was my preference. The 'Police Story' score always seemed to capture the intangible feeling of being out there, on the hunt.
