What are the best motion picture scores?

Some already mentioned are great...

..and I'll try not to repeat. I'd stay away from movies where the music itself was the theme, except for:

AMADEUS.........How can you beat THAT?

Fargo

Clockwork Orange

Top Gun

The Wizard of Oz

The Last Emperor

Macbeth (The Third Ear Band puts a really eerie touch on this)

The Godfather

And at least for honorable mention:

The theme for the original "Halloween" (1978). Still creeps me out.

John Carpenter, who wrote and directed the film, had no budget to hire a composer or an orchestra. So he rented a studio with some synthesizers for a few days and sat down to come up with the minimalist score himself.

Next to the "Jaws" theme, it became the most famous and recognizable scary theme in American film history.

The Exorcist was pretty good too. The original Halloween is my daughters all time favorite movie.

I have seen Hired Hand 2-3 times.
The story line does move slow.
I probably like it because it was filmed here and I recognize a lot of the scenery.
Like Cabazon Peak. A big lava outcropping - volcano plug - also known as the Devils Head.

I liked "O Brother Where Art Thou." "American Graffiti" was good. Just about any movie about Viet Nam.

The Exorcist was pretty good too.

Oh yeah! I went out & bought the Tubular Bells album.:D

A different take, adding drums. ;)

Casablanca. Dooley Wilson's "As Time Goes By" is a classic but the singing of "Die Wacht am Rhein" by the German officers being absolutely crushed by the singing of "La Marseillaise" by the bar patrons and staff is one of the most stirring scenes in film history, IMHO.

Well I think we can agree there are a whole LOT of greatest sound tracks! Maybe we should narrow it down to the top 100., any less just won't do. Someone mentioned 'A Touch of Evil' I'll second that one.
