Muzzle trashed...

I have seen rifle barrels counterbored like that. Primarily on M1 Garands to "freshen up" the rifling. The cause is from cleaning with a steel cleaning rod and allowing it to drag across the rifling at the muzzle. This destroys the accuracy as it wears down the rifling. The muzzles are rebored as much as 0.5 inch to regain accuracy.

Never have seen it done in a handgun like your is though. I have owned two ported handguns so far in this trail of tears. One was a IPSC M1911 in .45 ACP. That one had a large port screwed onto the end of the barrel. The other is a Ruger SR1911 in 10MM, that looks as if it has been sent to Magna Port for the porting.

Aj,... prob. should start a new thread for this question but since you mentioned the M1 G's, have you had any dealings with the CMP? If so, what are your thoughts>...

If you qualify to buy from CMP it is the best deal in town for Garands, etc..... PM me if you want.

I cant get over the strange design of the barrel tip. Does anyone have weapons,... pistols, rifles anything with a ported barrel, and does it have a larger inside diam. like the photos? It would seem to me the barrel stops where the rifling stops, and the extra ported section is for muzzle flash release or counter flip in recoil... Someone do a head to head with a non- ported model....Lets see what the designers had in mind with this brew!

This design is called an expansion chamber muzzle brake. Previously this was an add on/screw on design. Recent custom houses have done exactly this.

The counter bore and port do the exact same thing as the old add on part. The science escapes me BUT the end result is very effective.

My used handgun buying Rule #2 is always look down the barrel .
The barrel , to me is the most important part .

Rule #1 is ... make sure the gun isn't stolen !
Where I live the local police will run the serial number for you to make sure it hasn't been reported as stolen !

When you say,... the end result is very effective. Effective in what way?

I wonder if the ATF has a team that cruses the auction sites for reported stolen firearms/.... big job!

I have a couple 3rd gen’s with these ports. Best shooting center fire guns I’ve ever shot. Maybe the ports reduce muzzle flip, but I can’t say.

Ok gang,.... For those interested in the follow up on the shields trip to MA... First, I tried to make it clear to everyone involved with the evaluation, repair, testing... I wanted to know what happened to the pistol, in terms of findings, parts used and the danger using the original issue. That was a wasted effort, as it .... came back with a one line report saying,...Range test completed, recall repair complete....
I took many images before sending and the only thing I am sure of is the hammer was definitely changed. The down side is, the characteristics of the trigger are changed now for the worse... stiff, little gritty, much harder pull,...yeah new parts, broken in all that... but before going in,... one of the smoothest triggers I have.... had! overall, don't think I would do it again after this experience unless it was dangerous... not the same gun.

So I was looking at some CCI Blazer ammo on their site and noticed a restriction for the 5200 and 5201 9mm. Both of them have a plated lead bullet, the restriction says not to use in ported or comped barrels. Most likely the plating is thin and if (when) the plating fractures it spews lead in the port or comped portion of the barrel and probably a fair amount goes airborne leading to the issue that the OP had.
