My 28-2 Refinish job by S&W - WOW!

I have been torn about getting my 28-2 refinished or re-blued. Most of you guys told me to leave it as it was. But, I did not listen. My mom always told me that I never did listen to advice when I was young. At any rate, I let S&W do its magic to this gun. I just had it returned to me this week. You decide. Did I make a bad decision?

Yes, this is a shooter. And yes, it does look like a very nice model 27. I think that I did OK. I am extremely pleased with the appearance.

Looks like they gave it the current polish job, it is shinier than was standard on the Highway Patrolman.

They made it a sweet looking revolver and they raised the shine level in the blue to a more modern looking finish. Not quite a 27 level blue but much really nice. I'd be proud to pull that out of my range bag in front of my friends.

The price was very reasonable. I asked them to go over the internals and bring it back up to spec as well. When they received the revolver, they did inspect and sent me a quote for the whole deal. It is just about $225 shipped, I believe. $185 just for the bluing. It was very reasonable in my opinion.

I had a nice model 27-2 that was my safe queen. The shine on my 28-2 is just as shiny as that 27-2. The pictures don't do it justice at all.

I am excited to go and shoot it... maybe today!

Nobody ever says the gun won't look good when refinished. The question is whether it's a good idea from a cost standpoint. Add up what you paid for the gun, add the cost of refinishing, and ask yourself if the final cost is justified.

Basic 28, say $400-$450. Cost of refinish $250-$300 with shipping. That means you have $650-$750 in the gun.

That seems like a lot to me for a refinished 28. I think for that sort of money you could buy the much nicer and more deluxe M27 in very nice shape and you wouldn't have a refinished gun.

But it was your choice to do as you wished.

Last year I was really into Sig semi auto's and I bought several and I had some of them redone by a guy who does cutom finishes so these ended up being my own looking guns. I really like them but I also know that I actually lowered the value on a classic looking German P220 and a German P226. I enjoy them and they are mine to keep but if I sell them I wll lose a lot of money on the deal. It was my choice and there really is no wrong or right answer.

That was my decision point... whether or not to have that sort of cost built up into the gun or just leave it as it stood. After several months of thinking about it, I chose to add cost to it. It was what I wanted to do it. I don't plan on selling it anytime soon or in the future, but plan on shooting it.

Took it to the range today. I had a great time showing it off.

I was saying that in a good way with no offense meant as I think gunlovingirl is great. Trust me when I say I wasn't trying to reflect anything bad and was just joking.

For most of us, owning and shooting handguns is just a hobby - not a business.

If you have more than one, they're all a "waste" of money, if you want to look at it that way. So why worry about a few extra bucks put into something you really enjoy when we all fritter a lot more away in a year on cokes, CDs, tennis shoes, cell phones, or lots of other worthless junk that won't last nearly as long as your revolver will.

You did the right thing - because it was what you wanted to do. I think your HP looks very nice.

You got your moneys worth & then some. Every time you take that gun out to shoot, you will be glad you spent the cash. I learned a long time ago - you can't take it with you.

He said $225 total, $185 for the refinish. Not everyone can find a M27, and the "more deluxe" is just cosmetic, and he closed that gap considerabily.

While I own both, I actually prefer the styling of the M-28 to the M-27. For me, the 28 has much cleaner lines; I'm not crazy about all that checkering on the 27. However, I do prefer the 27's deep blue luster to that of the matte finish on the 28.

dutcher987 now has the best of both worlds, so, yes, it is worth the price. In fact, I'm envious.
