Early "no dash" guns are a bit lighter, -1 and later are easier to find holsters for. Once -1 production was in full swing, S&W really seemed to be firing on all cylinders regarding QC. In my opinion, the 90's were the companies last gasp at true QC. In the end, they're all built like tanks and will provide a lifetime of service.
Prices had started to climb on these even before the pandemic/election panic and proceeding events haven't helped. So, if you want one my best advice is this: Don't worry about model variations and aesthetics. Just find one that's in the best shape for the best price you can find. They're all solid.
