My 657-2 with Hogue Grips

I have never owned a 657-2, based on my recollection, the early 657's came we standard square butt n-frame target grips, I own a 657-3 that came with round butt Smith & Wesson/Hogue grips, made by Hogue for Smith and Wesson. They were emblazoned with the Smith and Wesson emblem.

My Hogue grips do not have S&W emblems, only "embossed" Hogue. The gun has been used (not by me) and I can understand the grips, they feel right for taking shots. Looks like I need to find some original wood. Thank You!

S&W Gunnut, the original 657's were mostly square butt, they were equipped with the standard goncalo alves n-frame target grips. The exception was the run of three inch barreled 657's in 1986, they were equipped with the round butt grip frame and goncalo alves combat grips. I don't know what the 657-2 came with as standard equipment or what grip frame was standard, my meager collection has a gaping hole between no dash 657's and a 657-3. I also prefer wooden grips but most of the original equipment stocks are quite expensive, especially for the round butt. I would recommend aftermarket grips, some can even be ordered with the S&W emblem. Good luck!

I took off the Hogues and put them back on. There is a "U" shaped piece of spring steel with a "bossed" threaded nut in the bottom of the "U" with a single small hole thru each of the top legs of the "U" and then that piece is pinned thru the bottom of the frame. Don't know if that bottom hole in the frame was a modification or original, anyway that was how the "U" piece was attached on the frame to mount the Hogues. The Hogues were fastened by a screw up thru the bottom of the grip. I would rather change all four tires on my truck than do this again. That roll pin was longer than needed which hindered removing the grip. Anyway it is a square butt. Got an acquaintance, an avid S&W collector, who has a correct set. I believe I will just put them in storage rather than take those "killer" Hogues off again. Thank You!

That pin in the grip frame is standard Smith and Wesson, it's the alignment pin for original grips. Do not remove that roll pin, it prevents shifting of the grips. The good news is that it's easier and marginally less expensive to find nice n-frame target grips for a square butt grip frame. Years ago I had the opportunity to buy n-frame square butt grips from a special Smith and Wesson run, I was giddy and bought grips for every square butt sporting Goodyear grips. Only to find a 6" 657 no dash with a round butt grip frame, hidden under Hogues. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor. I will say this, the .41 mag. is for reloaders, I believe, and several others on this forum may agree, that the .41 mag. may be the most versatile and accurate Smith and Wesson revolver in the Smith and Wesson line.
