I got this a year ago from a nice guy who I don't think understood how hard to find these are. Pre-MIM so made 1996-1997 I believe.

Not quite a factory gun as you can see. Previous owner put the D&L fixed sight on and had the Jerry Miculek trigger job and spring kit done. My addition is the Ahrends round to square conversion Cordia grips.

Planned future work includes cutting the cylinder for moon clips, a Hogue extended cylinder release, and sending it off to Mag-na-port for 2 ports and their Velvet Hone matte stainless refinish.

Dear HKC:

Very nice piece and the mods don't detract from the weapon in anyway from my POV; in fact, I think they are really make the piece even more desireable. I'm headed to the LGS tomorrow to look at a new 686+ .357, 4" barrel that I've put a modest deposit on until I could return from bus. travel.

I'm going to put the Hogue laminated rosewood finger grips on it assuming that I buy it - ahhh, hmmm, yea, that seems likely! Can't wait to see it. The only minor concern is that I've shoot the 6" & 5" guns quite a bit during my training (~ 400 rounds) and really love them but haven't shot a 4" yet; however, if it feels right and the sight picture works for me (I have mature eyes), then it's a done deal.

Your beautiful pics were great to see on the eve of probably adding a 2nd S&W to the family. Thank you for sharing.

Take care,

Thanks Rachel.

I made the mistake of talking about rebluing a rough shape pre 27 I was interested in buying (I did not buy it) and some of the folks here got a little upset! Modifying a newer gun doesn't seem to get anyone's goat, even one that S&W is not going to make more of (pre-MIM/pre-lock that is).

Congrats on the 686-4+!! :)

Very desireable model 686, that was only made for one year. 1997 IIRC.

I won't part with mine. Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI

Now that's one to hang on to for the long haul. Definitely always on my list to find. Congrats!

I have the 686-4+ in 4" and love it.

Here's a couple pics of it. I'm glad to hear about your mods. I wouldn't, myself, port it - but then I don't shoot a lot of full house mag loads in mine. If I did, then I'd probably port it.

OP if you really need a ported 6 inch 686-4+, there are two up on AuctionArms. Two of the "power port" 6 inch models. Pretty sure one is a 7-shot, but you may want to check. Fair prices on it too, as of this AM.

Owning a pre lock PC 586-5 L-comp which is ported, I must say I prefer non-ported revolvers. But to each his own. :) Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI
