My 686 SSR

Nice gun!

Here's mine:

Just picked up my own 686SSR as well. Getting it ready for some USPSA action soon. Just trying to find the right grips for the job. I'd also love to know the model number of that Hi Viz sight as well.

The SSR is a well balanced weapon and mine came from the factory with a great trigger and the mainspring has the same rib on it that the wolf springs come with. Never tested the trigger pull weight on it but it's very light for a factory gun. I did have to put the 1mm longer firing pin in to compensate for fail to fires with a light firing pin strike. I'm sure I could have put in a stronger mainspring but the extended firing pin seems to have corrected the issue.

Yes, the factory trigger is not bad at all. A friend of mine who has model 19 was amazed when he shot mine. Very nice trigger, he said :)

Hi viz sights

Congrats, really a nice one you got there. I just bought a 6" 686 from Buds. I haven't even had a chance to get over to my LGS to pick it up yet. I really like the idea of having the high viz sight, is that something you did yourself or had a gunsmith install. Is it something a "shade tree mechanic" can do? (without screwing somethin' up)

It's doable & you can do it yourself. I had no idea too when I bought it, but once you look at it, you'll get it.

Love those SSR factory grips. Wish I could find them somewhere. I picked one up at a gunshow and the grips really felt good. I put it back down of course. Any source for the grips?

Pretty sure I saw them in the S&W Retail Store. If you call them, I believe they will send them to you.

I keep going back and forth between the 686 ssr and regular 686 4" I finally had my mind made up on the regular 686 but now that I have seen this I am wanting the SSR again. I still have a few weeks to figure it out.

I just bought a new SSR, can't wait to pick it up and shoot! I'm just curious, does this gun have the potential as being a collectable in the future?

I had the 686+ in 2.5". I think the 4" has the nice balance overall & you can't go wrong either way.

When the 686SSR first came in, I went to get it - and wrote my check, only to be told by the store owner that the price was wrong - he added $80 to the price! I voided the check and left - stayed away for 6 months. When I finally went back, 5/08, he had the 686SSR - and, next to it, the new offering - 4" 627 Pro - for the same price. As I don't compete in anything but an open SPC game, the 8-shooter's round count was to my benefit. I regripped it and borrowed my 625JM's .25" HiViz sights - then ordered it's own sight and Ahrends grips:

I had a bad experience attempting to buy the 686SSR. In reality, while the OEM grips looked nice - they didn't feel good in my hand - too sandpaper-like for me. When I could get a great 8-shooter like the the 627 Pro for the same price - with a similar trigger, sight mount, etc - it was an easy choice for me to make. Just a consideration.
