In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I'm in England and today Nov 11th is their Remembrance Day to Honor the war fallen. Their "Rememberence Day" is always Nov 11th to mark the end of the Great War. Britain lost over 900,000 confirmed killed in action in WW1. Poppies are worn by many here as well. I get to participate and honor both the Americans who gave their lives as well as those British who did the same.

When I was a kid, I remember the VFW and American Legion giving out poppy's around Armistice/Veterans Day. Back then I didn't understand the significance. After I read the poem in Jr. High School, it clicked with me and I asked Papaw about it (who was a WWI truck driver) He told me about his experiences at Ste. Michel and the Somme and about Uncle Tommy who served in the Signal Corps and took me to him to hear his story. Uncle Tommy was shot off a telegraph pole by a German sniper and both told their stories and of other family that served in WWI.

I was in awe and it sunk in and to my dying breath, I will honor all those who served in WWI

To this day, I always give a few bucks to the VFW or the Legion when they hand out the poppy's. I have a bouquet of them now! And I'm proud of it!

I was in New Zealand last week and visited the Army Museum and was very moved by their Rememberance Day displays.
