Comment: Most excellent.
I have one that shipped a bit later that could double for yours, right down to the stocks. Alas, I have no LeSmok ammo. Welcome to the forum. You have started on a high note.

Wow...pretty nice 1st post. Welcome. Had to comment when I saw the Simmons Hardware destination. I have a M&P 1st model that shipped to Simmons in 1902

jwh32, Welcome to the Forum. Very nice Bicycle gun!. It s possible it was shipped with Pearls, but most likely it was hard rubber, if the factory letter doesn'rt mention the pearls, and the dealer put on the pearls. I have the first .32 Bicycle gun that S&W shipped, in my collection. It's blue, with hard rubber. It's a 1st model, special order, ser. # 53252, shipped June 14, 1893, and is documented in the Floor Foreman's Day Book in 1890. There's a few with lower serial numbers, but were shipped several years later, as the factory did not ship in serial number order. They are interesting guns. Ed.

jwh32,

Welcome to the Forum and CONGRATULATIONS on a fine old Smith.

Regarding whether or not the pearls are factory, the following might be helpful.

I have a .38 Double Action Safety Hammerless, Fourth Model that shipped in 1901 so it is of the same vintage as your gun. Mine (it was actually my wife's grandfather's BUG while he was a Texas Sheriff) has the same pearl grips as yours.

I found the proper red box for it at a SWCA show a few years ago and the following label is pasted in the box:

CAUTION
"As many inferior Pearl Stocks are fitted to our Revolvers after they have left our factory, it is necessary to caution the public in regard to them. These are thin, imperfect, ill-fitting, and in every way inferior to those supplied by us, and injure the appearance of the arm. In order to protect our reputation and the public it has become necessary to use our monogram trade-mark in the usual place in the stocks, as shown in above cut. This is inserted in gold or silver and is a guarantee of quality."
SMITH & WESSON

Along with that comment is a picture of a beautiful pearl grip with the S&W Medallion.

As I said, the box with that label did not come with my gun, however, it is the correct box. I don't know just when the Factory felt compelled to add that warning label but probably sometime close to the production of our guns. Perhaps Ed or one of the others who really collect these antiques can tell us just when the "pearl warning" label was first used.

Bob

(So Ed, your gun is the one that is mentioned in the SCSW...Congratulations to you also!)

jwh32,
Very nice little 32 Safety. It is a very early Serial number for a Bicycle gun. There are only about a 1/2 dozen of them with lower serial #s listed in Joe Millers data base of bicycle guns . I also have one that is almost a twin to yours. It shipped about a year and a half after yours. I believe that those are probably not factory pearl grips on your fine old bicycle gun. S&W started installing medallions in their grips around the mid 1890s, and by 1899 all of their models that had the special order pearls had medallions. But one thing that I have learned about S&W is never say never as they used up all of their stored up parts. Things that we know are factory installations often show up installed on guns years after they made an enginnering change. I believe that S&W factory pearls, both medallion and non medallion grips were heavier and thicker than most non factory pearl grips. I have several sets of early non medallion pearl grips that are easily as thick and heavy as the sets of medallion pearls that I have, and I am convinced that, as they came on 1880s and 90s guns, they are factory installations. I have a factory 1st model 38 Safety Hammerless box that I know was made in 1887, and it has a pearl sticker on the end label. I would be very interested if anyone has an earlier box than this one with a pearl sticker. I'd like to know when they started advertising pearl grips on boxes. Ed, when is the earliest pearl label you have seen?

thanks much to all the comments on my "Bicycle Gun" posting. especially was the education regarding pearl stocks by clifer I previously thought that ALL NON MEDALLION PEARL stocks were after market items. Also good was the info on pearls inside the box lids. My take on this was that early facory pearls were NOW BEING REPLACED
with the medallion style
