Some of you will remember me mentioning my sister before. She is the one that retired from the St. Louis public school system and ran away and bought a farm. I digress.

Recently, with all the madness, she was reading a lot of anti gun rhetoric in her local paper. She got upset and wrote this;

"A free people ought to be armed."
                                    George Washington
I think there is a widespread misunderstanding of the second amendment.  We need to look at history for an explanation.  When the American colonies were established, a king and a group of hereditary nobles ruled England.  In England the average citizen was treated terribly.  Their property could be confiscated, their lives forfeited, taxes imposed, and religion mandated all at the whim of a government in which they had no say.
When the American government was set up, the colonists wanted to do away with the old system.  They listed ten fundamental rights that were non-negotiable.  Without them the states would not commit to the new government.  Protecting the people from the government was a condition for the ratification of the new constitution.  Let me say this again.  The Bill of Rights was included in the constitution to protect the people from the government.  This list includes the second amendment.  With an armed citizenry (militia) the imposition of tyranny and dictatorship would become very difficult.
            Today the second amendment is being attacked from all sides.  Our government, our media, our misinformed citizenry, the United Nations, and many foreign interests would all like to see Americans disarmed.  Our protection is being eroded one step at a time.  Through history governments have successfully disarmed their people with horrific results.  This is usually a three-step process that takes a number of years.
 Step 1. Registration
 Step 2. Confiscation
 Step 3. Extermination of the designated scapegoat population.
            In 1911 the Turkish government passed a national gun registration law.  In 1915 the government confiscated the weapons of the Christians and the Armenians. By 1923 the government had exterminated one and a half million Armenians and a half million Christians and other undesirables.
            By 1918 Russia had a gun registration law in place and when an attempt was made to assassinate Lenin, the government ordered an immediate surrender of all firearms, ammunition and sabers.  Communist party members were exempt.  By 1939 some 20 million people were exterminated.
            By 1938, Germany had registration of guns, restriction of ownership to "…persons whose trustworthiness is not in question …", and a ban on Jews in the manufacturing or dealing in guns and ammunition.  At the end of WWII some 12 million people had been exterminated.
            There are other incidences in our history of vast numbers of scapegoats being exterminated.  Type genocide into your computer and you will find that machetes are now cheaper than guns and the weapon of choice in poor countries.
            America now has registration of guns and restrictions of ownership by permits, licenses, and money required for each.  We must not allow a sensationalizing media, an elitist Congress, and a panicked citizenry to impose any more restrictions on the second amendment.  The second amendment is not about hunting.  Yes, hunters benefit from this Constitutional right, but so do antique gun collectors and target shooting enthusiasts.  Most importantly each and every one of us is protected as long as we have an armed citizenry.
The crime committed recently against innocent children was unspeakable in its horror but guns are not the issue.  Mental illness is.  The young man was a social outcast and his mother knew this.  The media has been down on the mother for not getting help.  Unless you have had experience in dealing with the mental health field, you have no idea how difficult and how expensive getting that help can be.  Yet no laws have been introduced to help parents.  No money has been allocated to improve the system.  No media demand has been made for these changes.  Congress members have introduced no new bills that would help those suffering from mental illness.
We'll never know what made this young man snap, kill his mother, and then kill the children she loved but he could have done the same thing with poison, a bat, or a knife (machete).  Let's look at history and realize that our nation needs the continued rights guaranteed by the Constitution for the sake of all of us. Yes, even those who would never willingly touch a gun but are protected by those who carry.
I'll close with another quote from the Father of Our Country:

"[Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself.  They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence…From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable…The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference—they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."]
 {This quote is questionable}

Any thoughts yea or nay?

Why call her crazy? I think it was well thought out and written. We need many more letters just like this. It sums up my thoughts on the matter and I don't write quite as well.
May I ask permission to share this with my facebook friends and congressman?

Most people will refuse to recognize the possibillity of our own government rounding us up for execution. That's fine, but there is proof that the threat of an armed citizenry saved us from a land invasion by the Japanese after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Let me clarify something. The crazy part comes from the chickens. What chickens you ask? The 300+ chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys she raises as PETS!!

And we've done some more fact checking, and the last quote is questionable. We'll remove it.

Did I mention the chickens?

And, while Yamamoto is reported to have made that statement, the Japanese were never in a position to invade the U.S. mainland. They could never have supported it.

Rats. All this time I thought we scared him off.

Jack,
only has ten chickens...

Has she given them "all" names?? :D

Don

That may be true, but his statement sure helps our cause to keep the people armed, and had he the logistics and support it shows that there would have been major reservations about doing it.

The left does not use the truth to support their arguments, I think we should keep that little tidbit to ourselves.

After a little more thought it doesn't matter if he had support or not. The truth is Yamamoto was aked why he didn't invade and he could have said, we just didn't have the supplies, but he choose to state that their was probably a firearm in every other home.
