I came in to work Sunday night and, posted on my department e-mail was a notice from the firearms and range folks stating that they have a bunch of new M&P's in .40 ready to issue! They are replacing S&W Model 4006's we bought in 1991 and the Beretta M-96 .40 D.A.O. "Brigadiers" (shorter barrel and slide) we bought in 1993.

We have issue handguns for those who don't want something different, don't know any better or don't care. We have a choice of S&W, Colt, Glock, Sig, Beretta or Springfield (XD) in 9mm, .357 Sig, .40 or .45 ACP. About 75% of the deputies furnish their own handguns.

These M&P's are really catching on.

We issue the MP9, and I couldn't be happier with mine. I purchased my own MP9c for off duty, but I carry the full size pistol off duty fairly often. Got in on right now as a matter of fact. I hope those on your dept. who choose to carry the MP are as pleased with it as I am.

I remember with fondness the old days when we could carry our own. My M58 was heavy but comforting. Then we progressed to SW 651&M65s,made the switch to autos(3906,4506,5903 as you preferred), then to 5903s only, and finally to Glocks. Yes, I've been at it for awhile. If Smith had come out with a M&P9 just a bit sooner, likely we would have gone there instead of Glocks. Stay safe. Howard

The Glocks are the most popular, probably 60% in .40 and 40% in 9mm. A couple of guys carried 10mm Auto and .45 ACP, but we discontinued use of the 10mm (we used the 10mm FBI/Lite loading) and the only .45 user retired.

I don't think they'll be unhappy. I'm up to three M&Ps now, a 9mm compact, 9mm full size and .45 full size. All have functioned very well and are pleasant to shoot. Theres a lot of choices out there now but I don't think the m&ps give up anything to any other service pistol. My fave would probably be the .45 but any of them would do.

Hi there,

Great to hear you guys are going with M&Ps. What holsters are you using or are approved by your agency? I carry an M&P 40 FS some of our guys have the Serpa holsters. I am waiting to see if Tactical Design Labs comes out with one for M&P but want to see what else is out there.
Thanks!
