Now I've been around, and I've been around a LOT in Arizona. I've experienced some unique watering holes with a lot of history behind them, including St. Elmo's in Bisbee.

But the one I'd pick over all the others is housed in a building in Tombstone once owned as a hotel by one Mary Katherine Harmony. Let me bring you up to speed on her. She was one of the first "soiled doves" in Tombstone, and with her money, she became owner of the Grand Hotel on Allen Street. On the night before the famous "gunfight at the OK Corral," the McLaury brothers stayed in this hotel. As luck would have it, they didn't fare so well against the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday the next day. I guess it was pretty nice of Mary Katherine to put those dudes up for the night, because she was Doc Holliday's girlfriend. You may know her by her nickname, Big Nose Kate.

At any rate, over the years, the building that was once the Grand Hotel has evolved, and it now houses the saloon named after Mary Katherine. It's called Big Nose Kate's Saloon, and the joint is jumpin' every day. They'll fix you any drink you want from a "screaming orgasm" to a "tequila sunrise." The choice of beers is excellent. The waitresses are garbed in saloon gal costumes of the 1800s. Memorabilia from Tombstone's glory days is pasted all over every wall, and if you want to go downstairs, they have plenty of period western wear to buy. A band is usually providing western music. They even have a great selection of food - I can vouch for the hamburgers. Get yer picture taken with some of the barmaids; they'll even dress you up properly and give ya a double barreled scattergun so's ya can look real mean!

Oh, yes. The place is haunted. The most often encountered ghost is an old miner who evidently never wanted to leave the old hotel.

At any rate, I thought I'd share some thoughts on one of my favorite haunts. If you're ever in Tombstone, drop in. You won't be disappointed. Cheers!

Looks like my kinda place!

There was a scene in the movie "Silverado", when the main character meets the tiny little lady that owns the bar. She makes a great speech about why and how much she likes bars and the nightlife--wish I could remember it.

Nice review of the bar. The whole Tombstone saga has fascinated me since Kirk Douglas played Doc Holliday back in 1957, and I intend to get out there one of these days.

But how did you get that photo of the old miner's ghost drinking a beer? That's amazing! :)

What a great bar! We spent an evening at the Crystal Palace and it's amazing i remember it. When you read about the gunfight at "the empty lot not far from the OK Corral" they always mention Frank McClaury lifting a drink to his mouth in that hotel bar, is told his brother got thumped, put's the drink down then goes off to get "hurled into eternity". Great pictures as usual. You need to make cards saying:

Wire Paladin

Nice picture! I've been there a couple of times just to look around. Seems a lot of bars have the place Wild Bill Hickok was shot dead too. Quite an interesting place to look back in history! ;)

I'm no expert on saloons, by any measure. I've not been to Big Nose Kate's, it does look and sound quite nice.

Of the saloons I have been to, I really like The Palace, in Prescott. Good food, nice atmosphere. Prescott is a nice town to wander around in...and J&G is close by, if you feel like perusing their wares. And the trip up to Prescott, particularly the "back" way up from Wickenburg, is a nice little run, especially on a bike.

Though I never drink alcohol in an "licensed establishment" it loks like a place with a lot of character.

Eaten and drank at Big Nosed Kate's a number of times. Really preferred the Buffalo burgers at a place about 2 blocks North and across the street. To me, The Chrystal Palace across the street from Kates is more authentic

Never saw a ghost in either Tombstone or Bisbee though!

Did ya ever go to the Stock Exchangee in Bisbee? It is a bock south of St. Elmo's

Had a drink there once several years back when I was goin to school down there. The Crystal Palace has great food too, had the best beef ribs in AZ! Man that brings back a few memories. Thanks!

Looks more like an amusement park than a bar, much less a "saloon". Same goes for the "Palace" in Prescott. Detroit is a lot more of what I think the Wild West was all about. You want to find a real saloon, go check out the Polish Yacht Club. Or any neighborhood joint on Vernor. Bring your gun(s).

Surprisingly Big Nose Kate's serves one of the best pizza's you will ever find. For the record she got her name not for a large snout but because she always had her nose in other peoples business. Tombstone is always a good time but try the pizza, you will be amazed.

Been there. Wife was mad because burgers were only served well done. She likes hers bloody. Guess I shoulda seen the warning signs.

Oh yeah. Recently it's been under new ownership; the specialty is various beers, right in line with the building's original intent and the name of the street - the Brewery on Brewery Ave. (Brewery Gulch). The building was built by a fellow named Meuheim in 1905. His Victorian-era house still stands about 1/2 mile up the Gulch; it's been restored with a lot of original-era furniture. Quite interesting to see how people lived a century ago.

And speaking of pizzas, some really fine ones can be found at Screaming Banshee Pizza, just north of the Cochise County courthouse in Bisbee. It's fairly new, but getting to be quite popular. Real brick wood-fired oven, pizzas made to your order. It used to be a service station many years ago.

Bisbee still lacks a formal service station, although there are some pumps at a Circle K there. The nearest real station is a Standard at the traffic circle in Lowell - an eastern district of Bisbee. Bisbee is now sparsely populated; the old high school has closed. They were so small, right before the high school closed , drivers ed and sex ed were taught in the same car... It's since been upgraded and preserved as a sort of civic monument.
