Best western movie ever?

Not the top but highly reccomended for fans of Westerns.....

In 1999 there was a made for television movie released entitled "You Know My Name" , starring Sam Elliott. He played the role of William Matthew Tilghman in the last years of his life.

Bill Tilghman, born on the 4th of July 1854, lived a life that few could equal During his time here on earth these are some of the careers and endeavors he engaged in;

Cavalry Scout
Buffalo Hunter
Saloon Owner
Deputy Sheriff, Ford County Kansas, under Sheriff Bat Masterson
City Marshal, Dodge City, Kansas
Deputy U. S. Marshal, In the Oklahoma & Indian Territories
Rancher/ Horse Breeder
Sheriff, Lincoln County, Oklahoma
State Senator, Oklahoma
Chief of Police, Oklahoma City
Film Maker, " The Passing of the Oklahoma Outlaws"
City Marshal, Cromwell, Oklahoma, an Oil Boom town, where Tilghman was shot and killed in the line of duty by a crooked U.S. prohibition Officer. Tighman was 70 years old when he was killed on November the 1st 1924.

Definitely a movie worth watching.
Interested in reading about him? Try Glenn Shirley's excellent biography, entitled, "Guardian of the Law".

Any of you young whippersnappers ever hear of the movie Shane?

My vote goes to "High Noon" as best western.

But my favorite western is one of the cornball ones. My Name Is Nobody.
What can I say? I like westerns and comedy, that one gives you a good helping of both.

Well, not the best but still my favorite: Peckinpah's PatGarret & Billy the Kid.
...and to name a few: Death hunt, the Wild bunch, Cat Ballou, Jeremiah Johnson, Monte Walsh (and love the 'good times are coming' song) and all the Eastwood and JW western' movies....most Sergio leone ones......

Bob Steele: Did a bunch of Cowperson movies in the 30's. In one of them his BGF gave him a silver chain with a silver bullet on it to wear around his neck. Later on: A bad guy (black hat) backs Bob into an alley and Bob is hiding because he ran out of bullets. Bob chews thru the chain and takes the bullet and drops it in his gun and shoots the bad guy. Bob and BGF are happy but do not kiss, cause that's not the "cowboy way".

To this day I wear a silver bullet on a chain around my neck. (vampire insurance)

My Picks

My favorites;

Lonesome Dove; "Morning girls." "We got a herd of horses, two Irishmen and a mule." "You pigs go find a snake."

Tombstone; "Here are two local sophisticates now."

Hombre; "Looks like I brought my dirty clothes by mistake."

Best barroom brawler? Marlene Dietrich, hands down. Destry Rides Again

I'll watch Monte Walsh anytime it is on. Try the book, it's great.

New Westerns

Appaloosa, why didn't he cut the barrel off of that ten gauge?

True Grit with Bridges; "I can't do anything for ya son."

Nobody has voted for the second 3:10 to Yuma. I have only seen it twice but like it more and more. Charlie Prince might have been a little prissy but he was a bad dude....and he carried Smiths.

I'm gonna have to go with the Dove...Lonesome Dove.

More of an adventure than a movie.

Some purty good horsemanship there, as well as casting.

I will say this though...The Hat Creek Cattle Company ain't gonna amount too much, what with that whole herd of steers. ;):D

Dave

True Grit - the Coen Brothers version.

Shane is a close second, and will probably overtake True Grit eventually.

I love Lonesome Dove, but I have a hard time getting past Frederick Forrest as Blue Duck.

The Good, the bad and the ugly
Unforgiven
The Magnificent Seven
Outlaw Josey Wales
For a Few Dollars More
True Grit, original

In no particular order. I think you have to decide what type of western you like. The classic, John Wayne good versus evil western. Or the post Leone, grittier western. I prefer the Leone type.

This is a long thread, so I may have missed mention of the Anthony Mann westerns with Jimmy Stewart. All were good, with maybe Winchester '73 at the top.

The Wild Bunch....What a cast, what a story line, and William Holden at his best......That movie changed for better or worse the way action films were made forever...Who in that film wasn't a great actor...Notice I didn't say celeb. Actors......That last scene alone was corregraphed better than any thing before and maybe after...The director was a troubled genuis...."Why not!"

"The Professionals"; "Wild Bunch"; "Magnificent Seven" (especially the music); "Rio Lobo" (funny dialogue, and my hero, crazy old coot Jack Elam).

Have never seen the movie "Viva Villa" but have the theme music and it's great!

My choices for what their worth:

Lonesome Dove
Broken Trail
Open Range
Tombstone
Tom Horn (only saw this listed in one other reply)
The Shootest
Monte Walsh (both)
Conager
Wild Bunch
Fort Apache
See Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Quegley Down Under (Sp.)
Most all other JW's westerns
High Noon
