My first 686.

I've never been enamored with the 686 for some reason. I can't explain it myself, other than (1) SS is not my favorite, and (2) I don't really care for full length underlug barrels.

But a couple of days ago I bought/traded into a very nice seven shot, 686-8 with a 3" barrel and a round butt. I was able to convince myself the full length underlug didn't count because it wasn't any longer than the underlug on any other S&W with a 2 3/4" or so barrel. And while SS isn't my favorite, it's not like I dislike it or anything.

That's my favorite revolver but they're not for everyone, and if you want out, that 3" is a popular length. I'm thinking that you might have a -6 not a -8.

I'm not really a fan of SS or nickle myself but I love the older blues.

I have three 686's. The 4" and 6" are no dash guns and the 5" 1/2 lug is a 7 shot -6 Stocking Dealer Exclusive.

The 6" is my favorite gun to shoot but I still haven't shot my 4".

Sorry for the thread derail, but my 686 shows it's a -8 and is identical to the one pictured. It was sold to me as a -6 without the box.

I've verified the -8 under magnification and a strong LED. I've also read -6 is the latest and greatest and there is no -8. I'm sure there's no mystery here, just a minor point of clarification.

That's a sweet 686, OP, go fire some magnums!

I wasn't a fan of the 686 until I participated in a series of steel matches this past winter and spring. A friend hooked me up with someone who had a cherry 686-4 6" for sale. It's perfect for that type of shooting.
