My first K22

Picked up a K22 from a local seller yesterday. He claimed it was dated to 1938 per a phone call to Jinks back in the day. It had been reblued some time ago, and showed some pitting under the new reblue. However, the action was good, lockup good, and bore looked pristine. Anyway, I cannot resist a S&W 22lr, so I bought it for $310. Original (refinished) grips and a hogue grip as well. I think I overpaid, as it has no collector value, but it will be a great plinker.

I detail stripped it, and found a little rust under the grips. I broke two wheeler screw heads and used an ounce of Kroil getting the side plate off without damaging the screws--rust never sleeps. Overall, cleaned up well. First time I've ever had a pre-war S&W apart. No hammer block! Dios mea!

I don't think you got hurt at all buying that gun at that price. Now that you have it cleaned up, it should be a superb shooter. As a range gun, the lack of a hammer block is really not that significant, and if you want it as a woods walking companion, you need only be aware of its limitations and handle it accordingly. For maximum safety, you could carry it with the hammer down on an empty chamber like the old cowboys, but I don't really see that as necessary. Nice find, and even reblued it will look great when you get those "grips by Goodyear" off and put the proper wood grips every pre-War S&W deserves back on!

I'm at a loss to understand why you think that you overpaid.Any functional K frame .22 is worth that much as a shooter.

I've been lucky to get 3 over the past decade......from nice to very nice.

I would say from the posts here over the past 1-2 years with OK to nice k-22s going for up to $600-700 and really nice ones going up from there ......... you did well. I think many would think you got it $100 to 200 low (depending on market).... and how bad someone wanted a K-22

Personally I would like to have a nice "field gun" that I wouldn't mind taking beyond the range.

With the money you "saved"...LOL.....that gun would look great with a set of Executioner's stag grips and a Pychmeyer t-grip.

I am on a crusade to get people to ditch the white towels etc when photographing black guns, the camera stops down too much, all one sees is a black outline. Thanks.

Heck, it's worth $300 as a parts gun..I can't remember the last timeI saw a K frame under $400 in any condition.....I'd clean it up and shoot it till my arms fell off....and I agree with the other here...put some wood on that thing....

Yep...lose the Pach's put the wood back on and go find some .22's. Have fun shootin that one
