My first M&P Target model

Looks far nicer than my 1911 example. Not sure if it's the 6.5" tube, but it does not care for my mild wadcutters at all. 158gr standard pressure SWCs are just fine though.

And next, speaking of brand new OLD target guns!! (This one, an M&P, came to live here in 2003.) It was shipped December 23, 1936, and delivered to Patrolman H. R. Vibber, New York Central Rail Road Co. in Elyeria Ohio----with a Marble Ivory bead front sight. The Patrolman's cost was $31.23.

Three questions popped into my head at almost the same time: What's up with that front sight?/Why in the world didn't he ever use the gun?/How is it that a Rail Road Cop can turn loose of what at the time was a fair amount of money for a gun he obviously didn't need?

I decided almost immediately he intended to try his hand at the Long Shooters competition---those loony tunes who engaged targets out to 300 yards---with handguns(!!), (The M&P Targets being their favorite gun---and that front sight being what I thought might very well be a favorite for the task at hand.)

First off I learned maybe they're not so loony! I set up a string of targets in the front field, engaged the services of a shot caller, and cut loose! It took some doing, but I was at least on the targets in fairly short order---not "on the targets" such that I was a threat to take home any fancy trophies right off, but I was at least making holes in the paper!

I decided maybe he went to a shoot, decided those guys were nuts, and turned around and went home without even trying it. He should've tried it.

South Narc, what a beautiful M&P Target, absolutely my favorite S&W revolver ! Missed responding to this thread earlier but logged on and remembered to look it up to see your pics, have several days away to catch up on forum. The stocks are a delightful bonus IMO. Looks to be in that perfect condition that makes it a collectors piece that you can also shoot to your hearts content. One of mine goes on every range trip.
Let me know if you would ever want to part with it !

Thanks.

Hey Keith thanks for that sir, I'm really happy with this one! If I decide to pass it on I'll reach out. Likewise if here are any exhibition grade grips unclaimed on your bench, I'd be happy to claim them!:D
