I have Reg. 493, also sent to a hardware store in LA in 1935, but I can't seem to find the letter. When I can find it we can compare notes.

Regarding a couple of your questions:
The grooved hammers on the early M1917 (only those produced before early 1918) and the hammer on the Registered Magnums are not the same. The checkering on the RM completely covers the top of the spur while on the early 1917, the checkering is only on the tip of the spur. The RM hammer also has the patent date on the back and the M1917 does not. It has been postulated that the grooves on the M1917 were intended for oil retention. The Army requested that they be removed to avoid collection of rust and dirt. It is my opinion that the grooves were placed on the RM simply as an example of the superb workmanship that was put into that special product.
In Roy's early monograph he estimates that there were 839 Reg. Mags. produced with the 6" barrel. I know of no more recent estimates.

Man, you guys are killin' me. I thought I had done pretty well on my bucket list by getting a Model 16, and here you come and remind me about RMs. Is there a smiley that indicates green with envy, and maybe drooling?

That finish is about the best I've seen on RM photos. I've never seen one in person, but that bluing is amazingly intact! Thanks for sharing.

That is a real nice one, I passed on one locally about 5 years ago. It looked like it had been dragged behind car on a rope for 10+ miles it was rough for $600. I thought I'd find a better one, but alas not yet. My buddy reminds me about that one from time to time. Its still painful....
