My First Set Of Thailand Ebay Grips

Ordered them 10 days ago and got them today. Ad said it may be close to the end of March.

The fit is flawless, but I'm not a big fan of the color. I'm gusseting their laminate. Can you refinish laminate?

They fit my hand like they were made for it.

Don't know if I like the red stain either, but from the pic, I don't think they are laminate. It shouldn't be hard to refinish them in a color / finish you like. The fact they fit you gun and hand is 90% of the battle.

I think they look fine, but I also think they would be an outstanding choice if they were installed on a gun with a high polish blue!

I bought a similar pair a few years ago for my Model 36 I love them and they are comfortable and ergonomic. Those grips you have appear to be made of one of their local exotic woods, like mine. I'd leave 'em be.

The better high quality USA made grips are laminated. As such they won't warp and generally the finish and color are pristeen. The Thailand are "hardwood."

I've posted about this before. l ordered one set with good luck and then the next 2 sets were junk. Swore never again. But then read here about such good luck with ***** grips, so I ordered another set.

They didn't fit and even the slightest pressure to slide them in caused the wood to crack and the back corner fell off. Now, absolutely, positiovely, never never again.

want a good grip - buy an Altamont or Hogue. Only a few cents more, but delivery in a couple of days,not weeks. You get what you pay for.

I’ve bought 2 pairs from Thailand. Both are oranger that the pics but I don’t know if someone “tweaked” the pics. They fit nicely. I just wished they had more “target” type stocks that didn’t have finger grooves. They never seem to fit me right.

I ordered a set from them for my Ruger GP100 a couple of years ago and they fit my revolver just fine but they were too wide for me. I tried sanding them down to fit my hand but had a real problem trying to refinish them. Not sure what kind of wood they use, but if yours fit your hand I would leave them be. Actually, I think yours look quite nice.

I have a buddy who ordered a set of these grips. He absolutely loved them. The fit looks nice, not so sure of that color.

I bought these because their the same shape as the factory round butt target / banana stocks.

Same reason I bought a pair of Ahrends retro stocks a few weeks ago. I just love the size and shape of them.

Other than these and the Ahrends, I've not found another company that makes this style or size. I hate oversize stocks on a revolver.

I don't see any sign of them being laminated. If you want to tweak the color I would use Q Tip on a small spot on the under side and a liquid stripper. (don't let it run) then apply your preferred stain and finish to that spot. If it doesn't come out the way you want, the spot will not show when you put the grips back on the gun. They look OK the way they are to me also, but it's your grips.

It's been hit and miss for me. The first set I bought because of the unique color and pattern. The couple since have been pretty ordinary.

Eagle Grips are also a good seller of quality wood grips. Maybe some very very slight fitment needed, but the quality is bordering on what OEM S&W grips once were despite being made in India. They take old and worn metal S&W medallions and replate them and reuse them. The quality is leaps and bounds over that Thailand garbage. That "hardwood" is no hardwood. Far too brittle and weak plus the stain can wear off in a few months of use.

Bought two pairs from Thailand (who did NOT try them, as a cheap alternative ?). Hate the colour and one was damaged. Never again. But I knew it was a (cheap) gamble, so I’m ok with it.

I’ve posted my experience with Thai grips before, but since you ask...

I’ve ordered two pairs of smooth finger groove combats from two different Thai vendors. I wanted them to go on stainless revolvers so I ordered dark (ebony-like) wood. One pair was for a J-frame and was nearly black in color and fit the gun as well as any factory-made grips could be expected to. They fit my hand well, and look good on the gun as well.

The other pair was for a K-frame with square butt. Initially they fit well, but apparently dried out a bit more after installation and grew a little loose. The darker color also faded a bit to dark brown rather than the nearly black color they initially displayed. Like their J-frame cousins they feel good in my hand, so I have temporarily added some shims and plan to eventually glass bed them and perhaps darken them with a bit of stain since they are otherwise so well suited to my wants and needs.

The J-frame is one of the desirable Model 60-4s and the K-frame is a Model 66 ND that underwent full customizing to become “Project 616.” See image below.

PS to the OP: if not black, I favor a reddish grip on a stainless gun... I own a R*g*r Blackhawk whose factory grips are a nice deep red and I feel no need to change them!

To the OP I think your grips look awesome, I like the shape and the color and if you don't like them you could probably sell them and get your money back and just order another pair that you do like. It's kind of risky trying to change stain colors (especially on unfamilar woods from other countries) and get exactly what you want. You might end up with something you don't like and nobody else does either so you can't sell them for much. I once bought a set of grips for a Browning HP that were pretty red and I didn't like them at first but I got used to them plus they later darkened a little with age.
