Found this one on GB and had bid it up to $381 and I was not winning it at that price. So 2 days before auction end I decided to put in one more bid at a max of $402. Sure enough $402 was the current winning bid for 2 days and everybody must have gave up because I won it at that price. I like to shoot my revolvers (carefully and cleaning afterward) so short barrels have really never been of interest to me. This M&P finally got home and all the numbers match at S 959766 except for the grips (which fit pretty good). The right grip is stamped 111 only on the inside so could it have been on the 10th K22 made?? I know they started at K101. Anyhow every time I look at or handle the gun I get that old time mobster voice in my head ("stand back you coppers... see, yeah") like baby face Nelson or something but I know that all predates this gun by about 20 years or so but I still feel like putting on a zoot suit putting in my pocket and driving an old Ford with a flat head v8. Guess I am going stir crazy with all this virus stuff keeping me in the house so much so I had to take some pics and show off my latest toy to you all. Enjoy.

My first snubby and it's growing on me...

How much did it grow - 1/4", 1/2"...? Be careful, if it keeps growing on you it will eventually become a 6" M&P and you'll need to get a longer holster...;):D

Seriously - that is a beautiful example of a long-action post war M&P snub at a great price. I think buyers may be a bit distracted right now with everything that's going on. Congrats on a great buy and I know exactly what you mean - those little guys grow on me as well.:)

Barrel is absolutely righteous. A beautiful example I have a early C prefix one that now serves as my wifes door greeter lol...

Not again! No - not cut down.

OP - I am sure that you have the envy of many here - fine old snub and a GREAT deal. I have a near twin - I paid more and was still happy with the price. You snuck in under the radar somehow.

Great gun. I really like my early-50s pre-M&P as well. A word of warning however if you're going to shoot it. Lead bullets only! I didn't realize that when I first got mine. After 125 standard pressure factory loads with jacketed bullets, the barrel cracked. Fortunately, I was able to find a replacement that was numbered 122 away from mine, but it was an expensive lesson.

That is a pretty good price for a postwar M&P snubby in fairly good condition. I see these with asking prices in the $600-$700 range. Yours probably shipped in late 1947. S&W shipped quite a few of those out around that time period. Even though the grips may not be original, they are period-correct. This is mine, but the SN is slightly higher than yours. Now you need to find a nice Colt Detective Special from the same time period to go with it.

Is this an established bit of information that I have been unaware of? Should the lead only standard be applied to all 38 sp. S&W revolvers of certain vintage?

It's mentioned in other threads. Documentation of the time stated to restrict the use of jacketed bullets to minimum.

Seems like these shorties have multiplied on a few of you guys (not a bad problem to have). I spend a lot of time searching gunbroker and have noticed that lately quite a few 2 inch guns from the early 50's with C serial been showing up for sale. Never have I seen that many come up for sale at once. I really wanted a pre war snub, but looks like the post war long action guns are identical to the pre war until they change to the short action in the C series.
As far as bullets go I reload and lead is far cheaper than jacketed so everything I shoot is lead except for 9mm, 45 acp, 357 mag heavy loads and 44 mag heavy loads. Even in the mag calibers I mostly shoot mild loads with lead wadcutter projectiles.
Thanks to all for your kind remarks!
