My first wheel gun

I just traded my Adams Arms AR piston pistol for a 6 inch model 57 with shoulder holster and 150 rds of 210 gr remington jsp. I'm hoping that this will be a good hunting pistol. I've never shot a .41, but have I have researched it and it seems like it should do fine. I'm also thinking that the 210 gr jsp should be good for ground hog, deer and coyote. I may even try turkey, but think it may be too much.
What are your thoughts. Who has hunted with a model 57 and how did it go?

The .41 Magnum may be a bit much for turkey; you might mess up a lot of meat unless you're good enough to make head shots only.
It should do an admirable job on deer.

You will like that gun I certainly like mine. For big game I would use a 215 gr hard cast SWC for good penetration but others may disagree. If you plan on shooting a lot hand loading the 41 is a big advantage.

I plan on getting the dies for .41. I currently reload 5.56, .270, .35 rem, 30-30, .45, 9mm, .357 sig. Now I just gotta find out what she likes to eat. Hopefully she's not too picky

I don't know that I would hunt Turkey with a Magnum.

Deer, and other good sized game will be a better application for a .41

It looks like you do your own loading, and you almost have to in the case of the .41 Magnum.

It is the greatest that never was. It can do everything, but it came along too late as .357 and .44 were magnum calibers that were already firmly implanted.

Fans of the .41 though will insist it can everything those calibers can do just as well.

I want to get a 57, but I don't handload (Maybe Someday) so it probably won't be for a while.

That is 1 fine looking Smith! As mentioned, you will not be able to stop at 1, because there are so many others to choose from! I have never had or shot a .41 Mag. but have been tempted many a time. Maybe I am too cheap (or lazy) to take on another caliber to reload. Enjoy it! Bob

I'm thinking I may have to get another Smith to mount a scope on. I really don't want to modify this ones frame, but I do need a scope to make up for my poor eyesight. Maybe I'll try and trade a Sig or 2 to get another Smith. Iguess I need to do some research on hunting pistols...

You are going to like that puppy. I have never hunted with the 57 but I own a few. It's a great caliber and a great gun.

I have killed deer and wild pigs with a S&W 44 Mag, so I can say that your 41 Mag with Remington 41 Mag ammo will do just fine.
I have also killed turkeys with the 44 Mag and with a 1911 in 45 ACP. Just call them in close, and shoot then just above the beard,or at the top of the wing if they are sideways, as the breast is all below the beard.

Superman, here on the Forum, should chime in and he can give you some Great Info on the 41 Mag, as he has been a 41 Mag Freek, [a complement] since the mid to late 1970's.

I'm kind of excited about deer hunting with a revolver. I once got a russian boar with a 1911, I went through a full mag and part of another before it dropped six feet away from me. I'll never try that again, especially with 180 gr hollow points. I should have used the 230 gr fmj that I had 2 mags of.
