Most guys refer to this as their "man cave". But to me that suggests it is a garage conversion. Mine is an actual bedroom in the house. I know I've told the story here about how I managed that.

I see in here this subject comes up from time to time and lately every time it has come up it gives me stress. Especially when pics of totally awesome situations that have been done be it garage or spare bedroom.

some of them are way past what mine ever has been or ever will be but mine has always met my needs. The reason I get stress lately at the thought of it is because it has been a total wreck for a while now and the desk and the day bed and the gun cabinet and even the pics on the walls have been in total disarray and not usable. The only place that was still respectable was the little memorial area I have set up for my late father.

The reason it has gotten so out of hand is because over the years I have made changes in there depending upon what my primary interest was at a given time. It started off with motorcycles. Had lot of paraphernalia, Accessories etc and a lot of pics of various rides and races etc on the walls.

When I got out of that fishing became my main focus. I still rode my street bikes but I was done doin' it in the dirt. And I started fishing a LOT. The bike stuffed was pushed to the back of the closet or moved out or sold and the rod racks and fishing pics and gear plus a repair and cleaning space and leader building area.

Then I got up to speed on computes and began writing. Lots of personal memories going back to my earliest memories of my childhood up to and through my military days and beyond. I even did a couple of short stories for my grand kids and a couple of full novels.

Then I rediscovered my passion for guns and shooting and began accumulating guns, ammo, accessories and supplies plus a space for cleaning and tinkering. And of course I had to put in a gun cabinet.

By the time I had all that pretty well in and set up you could look in there and have to wonder just what was going on in there. The answer would have been, "a little bit of everything and not much of anything. I finally got to the point where I made a decision and it is now time to step in and get control of things in MY personal private space.

I have now committed to this project and just finished my first day of getting things in order for the first tiime in a LONG time. the hard part was deciding what I wanted my main focus to be in there. I have given up on the writing for the most part. I took the computer with the writing program and the lazer printer out.

The motorcycle stuff is gone. 80% of the fishing stuff is outta there or will be in the next day or so since I have only been fishing two times in as many years. The main theme in there when it am finished will be guns.

I don't reload so I won't need any space for that. The pics and wall hangings will be a mixture of all my interests with each represented to some degree or other. But the main thing will be gun related stuff. A few shadow boxed fire arms etc.

And since Miss Pam and I have done so many cruises there will be some cruise pics in there and now that I'm a sho' nuff cat wrangler I expect I'll have to make room for some cat pics as well.

Right now I plan on taking every thing out except the gun cabinet which is bolted to the wall and re painting and texture the ceiling and take out the carpet and put in a wood floor. I may chicken out on some of that part but I'll go until I run out of gas.

Y'all wish me luck. I have been puttin' this off for long time. Too long as a matter of fact and now it's time to get busy.

If I had a garage our cars would be in it. My man cave is in the basement and, I guess, does look like a cave. A rectangular cave with paneled walls but long and narrow non the less. Guess you could call it a cave. No pics, I won't embarrass myself with my lack of photo skills.

Geez, Walkin Jack, you sounded like a "Real Man" until you got to the part about not being a reloader :). Best of luck to you on what sounds like a really fun, long-term project.

Regards,

Dave

Well yeah, I see what you mean. I should have started reloading when I got back out of the service. I was 22 years old and had a lifetime of shooting ahead of me. But money was tight and I didn't have many guns and didn't shoot that much. And ammo was cheap enough.

So I kept putting it off and putting it off. Now I'm 70 years old and can't afford to get the good stuff to set me up and I don't know how much longer I'll be shooting with this arthritis in my hands and shoulder. It was bad before my surgery. It is much better now but started heading back the other way lately. I'll just have to "pay as I go" I suppose. Just bad timing all the way around. :o :(

Good going Jack.
It's good to weed out unused stuff every once in a while.

My man cave is a small 3 bedroom house with an attached carport.
The guest bedroom has the gun safe and all the range gear.
No pics on the walls.
The small bedroom is the office and book room.

I have very little furniture in the living room, but there are some nice framed maps and ship pictures hanging, and one large framed Monaco Grand Prix poster that has yet to find wall space.

And D-O-D will revoke my mancard, but I've never started reloading, either. :D
I've always moved too much to get involved.

Well, at least you have some realspace to call it a Man Cave. Me? the only space I have--is one of my closets. >\\:-=(( I cant wait--tillI find a better place to move to.

I had to add an edit.Sorry I sounded snotty about it--I was making fun of myself especially for choosing where im now at. HOPEFULLY--sometime in 2015--ill bemiles elsewhere and in a much bigger place. :-00

I've lived alone for going on nineteen years, since my wife's death, and have lived in apartments for over thirty years. My whole home could be called a "man cave", but I don't much like the term.

Except for my little dog conning me into playing and walking, I can have all the solitude I want.

But Jack, I like your idea of a memorial area for your dad. I had thought of setting up one for the brother I lost a month ago (he can't have been dead a month), but I may do something that commemorates my wife and my parents too.

Thanks.

"soloitude"? Is that some French thing?

I have always like and related to the line spoken by the character Bobby Shatford talking about how much he loved to fish: "I love to fish. But I'vb got a woman I can't stand to be more than 10' away from".

I feel the exact same way about Miss Pam but still, sometimes....just every once in a while....

I may have posted these before but I don't think, in this case, that anyone will mind.

1. The entire "memorial"
2. The frame on the left in this pic is his Certificate of Service. On the right is his Honorable Discharge. In the center is a letter of thanks from Harry Truman President of the United States Of American. Been a while since we had a POTUS with that kind of class.
3. The Shadow box with the flag from his funeral, His pic in uniform, his wings, his rank insignia (major) and his 1903.

Even after 5 years I still pause here and look at this and give thanks I had such a great father.

Here's a few pics I was able to find in my files that give a few "versions" of my FOS.

Pics 1, 2, and 3 were during the Fishing period.
4. When I moved in the computer and laser printer for writing.
5. When I move in the gun cabinet.

I know I have some pics of the motorcycle period but I evidently don't have them in my computer.

So there's a glimps of my refuge as it evolved over the years and decades.

Walking Jack, that is looking good. I think all such places should evolve anyway.
My "Man cave" is half of our finished basement with the other half for my wife's scrap booking hobby.
We had a flood there and had the basement waterproofed and the drywall replaced. It was during a period I had back surgery so everything got piled up and covered over by my wife and others, what a mess.
Slowly it's getting back together again as I've painted and had the furniture cleaned the other day. We put in one of those electric fireplaces and will be getting a bigger TV for down there.
My side is a hunting theme with mostly old duck decoys and other hunting antiques. My wife is wanting to finish it up by the holidays so we can have family there as it's a bigger space than our living room.
My reloading/gun bench had to be rebuilt also in the next room and just now getting things organized in the drawers so I can reload again. I've had to buy .45 acp so the savings will be welcome and fortunately had other calibers reloaded before the flood.
I'm looking forward to using the space again but will miss my Brittany who used to spend much time with me there.

That set up is well done and i like it. I would like to do one like that for my dad and grandfather.
