A friend of mine bought this Remington 870 12ga last year. I put the Carlson 3 shot magazine extension on it for him. We put 3 shots through it, and he never shot it again. He came by today so I could help him install a tonneau cover on his p/u truck. When we got done, he pulls this out of his truck and asks me if I want everything for $300.00! I couldn't pass up the deal. :D I gave him the $300.00 and tossed in 3 boxes (150 rounds) of factory .357 Sig HPs just to make me feel better.

I just ordered a Wilson Combat 2 rd mag extension to replace the 3 rd, a black synthetic Speed Feed stock and fore end, and a Mesa Tactical Sure Shell saddle-mount with a Picatinny rail/4 shot shell holder for a Bushnell red dot that I've had laying around waiting for a home.

I'll update pics when I get it done the way I want it.

Hard to beat an 870. I've got a Tac 14 with a brace as one of my house guns. Put a one round extension on it but that and the brace are my only mods so far.

I'd like to know how that shell holder/rail works out for you, been thinking about that one myself.

You certainly can't go wrong with a Remington 870 shotgun! I've owned several over the years, and they are extremely stout and dependable. Currently I only have an 870 turkey model with thumb hole stock. For home defense and travel, I decided to go semi-auto and picked up a Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol. It's an outstanding shotgun and I've never had a F2F issue with birdshot, buckshot, or slugs. Congratulations, enjoy!

I'll post pics of it when it's done. Should be about a week. As of right now I have it stripped down waiting for the new wardrobe to arrive. :D

I've had so many shotguns over the years I don't think I can remember them all. From .410 to 12 ga. and semi-auto, SxS, O/U to pump-action. Both field and LE/Tactical. Remington, Mosberg, Ithica, Beretta, Franchi Spas, and Benelli. Got rid of them all for one reason or another. Still have my trusty 11-87 Premier Light Contour, though. :D

Is your Tac 14 one that comes from the factory with the MESA Tactical brace setup? Those are really cool and haven't seen around here for sale and only a few setup that way on GB. That is a sweet setup!

Love the 870 and 1100.
Wondering what your barrel length is?
Is that an Express ?

11-87 Premier has a 26" LC Vent Rib Barrel - Rem Choke System - Gloss Blue finish - Walnut Stock/Fore End

870 just has '870 Remington' stamped on the left side of the receiver - Cylinder Bore 18.5" Barrel - Black Matte Parkerized finish - Probably a same or similar finish as an Express/Special Purpose model

My takeaway is your friend seems helpless. He needs help installing tube extension. He needs help installing a tonneau cover. Now if needing help is code for “ I’m stopping over with a 12pk “ that’s ok. But if he can’t manage those to simple task , I’m not sure he should have a gun.

That’s a little harsh.

I could certainly remove/install my tonneau cover alone, but it’s really a 2-person job. I’ve done minor gun work for family and friends that they were perfectly capable of doing themselves, but I had experience and/or the right tools for the job.

And it appears the gentleman in question no longer owns the gun, so any concern on that front is no longer warranted.

Finally, got'er done. Parts arrived this afternoon. Just waiting on my 2-point nylon sling to get here sometime this week.

Mesa Tactical Picatinny rail/4 rd saddle and 'vintage' Remington factory 2 rd mag extension with spring, and clamp/swivel combo. I was lucky to find that. 'New old stock' in the factory box but paid dearly for it. Oh well.... Added a Bushnell RXS-250 Reflex red dot that I had laying around looking for a home. I'll get the red dot zeroed in this week sometime with slugs (4 slugs in the saddle for 'slug select' option). :D

He's not 'helpless'. He just didn't have the proper tools necessary to remove the 2 dimples in the magazine tube that would obstruct the follower. I used my Dremmel for that. As for the tonneou cover, like Frailer said, one person could do it, but it's a little easier to install with 2 people. And I don't mind helping him. That's what friends are for. :D ;)

Well, here's a weird story....

Got done putting the accessories on my 870 2 days ago and put it in my closet. A few hours later I'm sitting in my living room recliner watching TV and I hear a noise like someone dropped a small metal object on the hardwood floor. I hear a tick, tick, tick noise then nothing. There's no one around. I get up and look around but don't see anything on the floor, under the sofa, recliner, etc. Huh...weird. I get home yesterday and set up my shooting bench out back to zero in my 870. I get everything all set up and go in the house to get my 870. The brand-new, never used Bushnell RXS-250 red dot is laying on the floor next to the 870. WTH?? I pick it up and notice that the clamp on the left side of the red dot is missing. I look around and find it behind one of my gun cases in the closet. For some reason the screw on the red dot decided to break for no apparent reason launching the spring-loaded clamp. That's the noise I heard the night before. A small portion of the threads were still in the clamp. And No, I didn't over-torque the screw. So, I had to put everything away and try and contact Bushnell for a new screw. Yeah, good luck with that via a phone call. Had to send them an email. Fortunately, I have a buddy who owns a small engine repair shop. I stopped by there today and got a solid steel, metric machine head screw that will work. (the Bushnell mounting screw is made out of some kind of junk pot metal). Just a minor set-back. At least my new sling arrived today and went on just fine. Oh yeah, I also ordered a Houge 'youth' stock, too. It has a 12" LOP instead of 14" LOP that the Speed Feed that's on the 870 now. I'll see how that goes. Stand-by for further.....

Not firearm related, but one of the best folders I ever had was a G-96 #960 made by Jet-Aer Corp. Patterson N.J. Sadly, I lost it some years back. Helping a buddy clean out his deceased brother's estate and what do I find? The same knife! As a gift for my help, he gave me the knife and some other items.

If I had an 870, I’d send it to Wilson Combat and let the guys with a lot of knowledge and experience work their magic.

A man has got to know his limitations.

Personally, I feel that any man who isn't too proud to admit when he needs help is a wiser man than he who tries to do everything on his own and only succeeds through trial and error, all for the sake of his fragile ego, and being able to say he did it all by himself.

If mankind were meant to do everything alone, then mankind wouldn't be so utterly reliant upon cooperation to succeed.
