This all started about 6 weeks ago. An innocent purchase from forum member "getoff" M12-3..... 1st nickel gun, 1st K frame, snubby....how can you go wrong........

Then I got it in my hands and loved it.....

2 weeks later I find "Deformlux's" M12 no dash with blued finish and flat-latch.....I fell in love. (special thanks to SASABERANGER for the period correct diamond magnas!)

I can't keep my eyes......or my pocket book off these little buggers. Just need a 12-1 and 12-2 for sure......

Anyone have the same addiction:)

Some of the nicest examples of Model 12s I have ever seen. Almost all the 12s' I've seen have been finished challenged. Yours are beauts hang onto them.

Have a 12-2 which was purchased in the early '80s. Used it as a hide gun during my deputy sheriff days. Qualified with it, then resigned from active law enforcement and it has been under my pillow ever since. Can't bear to shoot it; it's too pristine, so I bought a Charter undercover to carry. Now the 12-2 sits on a warm pillow in the bedroom. Hope I never have to use it. PS, my first S&W, a model 15 combat masterpiece which I carried for 8 of my 10 years as a deputy. Bought a Dan Wesson M15 satin finish .357 which I carried the last two years.

Is the pre model 12 the model with the aluminum cylinder?

Is the pre model 12 the model with the aluminum cylinder?

the earliest were alum cyl around 1952-53, later steel. The mod numbers came later still, around 1957. So some pre 12's would be alum cyl, some steel. The alum cyl guns were retro fitted with steel cylinders if returned to the factory.

Those 12's are beauties! I really like the looks of a model 10 or 12 snubby, but my own particular weakness is Chief Specials. I currently have a blue 36, a blue pre-37, two 60's, and just bought a nickel 36 and am waiting for it to be shipped from out of state. I've also bought and sold three other 36's, a 36-1, a 37, and a 60 in the past year (along with two Colt DS's). It's a sickness......

Thanks bronco45! I have to agree... I was lucky to score these "safe queens". My daughter will get them someday. With any luck she will get a whole model 12 collection:)

Ah the finish challenged Model 12.....

This one spent it's entire life in a nightstand drawer until my
wife purchased it from it's orignial owner. A 92 year old woman who was going into a assisted living center.

This 12-2 dates to 1972 and has all of it's original finish.

What is appropriate ammo for a 12-2? I am pretty sure no plus p.
Thanks

Some say no +p. another forum member did a "test" and had no issues after quite a few rounds. I guess it's shooter preference....

The general rule is to practice with standard .38 special loads and load +P for carry purposes.

I have fired numerous +P 158 gr loads out of my 12-2 with no ill effects.

That being said, the recoil is noticeably heavier...

Here's a photo of the 12-2 snubby I bought (and promptly traded off) last year. It was in really nice shape except for quite a bit of shiney aluminum showing around the edges. I guess it was carried a lot but it sure didn't appear to have been shot much.

Here is a scarce snubnosed Pre Model 12 Square butt. The finish is excellent as these guns go. 410 Bore hooked me up with a correct box. I had to make the stocks fit with some sandpaper persuasion.. The fit is pretty good but I would love to find a set that were from a M&P Airweight SB pre model 12. Notice they over stamped Round Butt with a SQUARE stamp as they made so few this way. From 1956.

Love those 12's and pre 12's. The bottom gun is a 4 screw, steel cylinder pre 12. All that narrows the date down pretty well. That SB by mbliss57 is really sweet.

Ok, guys...no more Model 12 threads, please! I'm still fruitlessly hunting for a Model 12-4 in Mississippi and these threads with the beautiful pictures do nothing but drive me nut! Cut it out!!!!! LOL!

Nice collection

Those look nice together, glad to see it made its way to a good home.

For you Model 12 aficionados, what would be a "fair" price for a round butt, Model 12 with a 2" barrel in excellent condition? Thanks.

I coveted a Model 12 for years. Recently acquired a very nice one - so I understand your addiction.

FYI, Hornady makes a 90 grain low recoil, .38 Special defensive round just PERFECT for the Model 12!
