My mommy and daddy open carry...

From all I can read and hear I believe that Texas is on the vege of passing Open Carry legislation. I hope it passes because I believe that everyone that WANTS to open carry already has the right to do so per 2A.

On the other hand I know it is not for me. I can not imagine a situation or circumstance where I'd want to open carry in public. For me Conceal Carry gives me not only a sense of security and confidence but also gives me the advantage of not giving away my edge. To me OC is like a poker player talking his hand or a boxer telegraphing his punch.

Open Carry is perfectly legal here in Michigan and due to the Open Carry movement it's becoming more common. I've seen it a few times and really haven't seen any need to comment on it, it's not something I would choose to do but I don't see any real harm in the open carry of a handgun. One positive of the Open Carry movement is that some public festivals that attempted to ban the carrying of firearms got "educated" by the Open Carry movement about Pre-emption here in Michigan and now permit the carry of firearms either openly or concealed. Another positive is that "printing" is no longer considered a violation of your Concealed Pistol License.

Now, carrying an AR-15 into a public library is something I would consider a bit out of bounds but if that library had posted a no firearms notice in disregard to Michigan Law (Pre-emption) I can see the need to make a point.

As for a backlash, when I first saw the stories on some of the goings on with the Open Carry crowd I fully expected the Liberals to go freaking nuts. Oddly enough that hasn't happened. It seems that there isn't much of an anti gun movement in Michigan, probably because half the state goes on vacation the week that Deer Season opens.

Having the right to open carry is good but people who open carry should be licensed just like concealed carry licenses I also believe that ANYONE who carries a firearm concealed or otherwise should also have to qualify with them on some sort of regular basis so that at least some level of skill and accuracy is maintained among the populace that chooses to carry Just because someone can carry doesn't mean that they should be allowed to. Licensing helps to filter those who should and shouldn't carry.

Oklahoma has open carry. I listened to all of the fear and concerns from some (very few) of my LE brothers. I told them it would be a disappointing nonevent for them. It was. I don't open carry off duty but if you legally can and want to then knock yourself out.

I wonder what OC will do to LEO scenes? Officer roles up on a carjacking/beating/whatever. Half a dozen mall ninjas standing around with bottom feeders in swat leg holsters. Will Officer have to change his method of securing the scene. I know, they could have them concealed but lets stay with OC on this one? Will it present "special" threats that don't exist in a "concealed" society?

Why do you feel that people should have to be tested and pay a fee to exercise a right?

Should you have to take a test to go to church. Pay a fee to vote?

Open carry by lawabiding citizens has always been a right here in Arizona ever since statehood in 1912. We didn't have a concealed carry law until the early 90s.
I spend a lot of time out on the desert and for those that have never been in Arizona these areas are huge. You never know who or what you'll meet when your out there and I'd rather they can tell at a glance I'm armed. I won't go into detail because of "politics" but IMO anyone who ventures out onto the desert unarmed here is a fool.

I believe in letting people do what they want, but I'm afraid that when open carry passes that it will backfire. If it gets added to the 30.06 regs then people will put up 30.06 signs to ban open carry and will ban CC in the process.

Despite what Texans say, Texas is not really a true "progun" state. If you have less than 10 acres, you are at the mercy of the local .gov if you want to shoot on your own land (my coworker with 3 acres was told no).

Open carry works in some areas like AZ because it has been legal pretty much forever, so it's not "new". The people are used to seeing it.

The government used to say that to keep "brown folks" from being able to carry a weapon.

I believe in freedom, too bad more people don't

I really do not care about OC one way or the other, however who can pick and chose what is "Normal" today??

Now of course we can not discuss it here, but think of all the other things that are shoved at us these days that is supposed to be the new normal??

A quote from that article:

"It's the intent that frightens me. I'm not interested in open carry becoming normalized for children and "more mainstream" as the book hopes. It's the same reason I don't let my children play with toy guns. I don't want to live in a world where it is normal for teachers to be armed or your local pastor to be packing heat during his sermon. If we do, we are creating an undercurrent of fear where it doesn't belong."
