My new 10-5

Looks like she had some cold blue touch-up applied and the faux pearl grips added to give some "class". But in any case, it'll be a great shooter. Enjoy:)

The grips appear to be real pearl.

Is there any way to find out?

All I know is an elderly lady came into my local shop with a few guns to put on consignment. Her husband had died a few months earlier and she had no surviving family. My shop called me straight away because they knew I would want it. I believe this gun to be early 60's and he bought it new.

If you remove the grips, it should become obvious if they're real or not. Real pearl will be much heavier, harder and denser than any plastic.

Yup, and if you rub your teeth against the grips you can tell. Real pearl will feel rough like sandpaper against your teeth. Anything else will feel smooth and slippery. Just don't scrape any off and inhale it. Real pearl is quite deadly if the dust is inhaled.

Why someone would put those grips on is beyond me!

Way back when, pearl grips on a handgun was very popular. I can remember many folks changing the wood to pearl or ivory when I was a kid. In fact, a friend's father had a nickel plated .38 snub with pearl grips with S&W medallions.

Slee's gun looks just like Dad's Model 10 except for the grips. His 10 has PC magnas. There is just something the Model 10 that keeps calling me, like the way it caresses my hands. And no sharp edges from sights. Dad's 10, Now my Model 10, is a 'Natural'

Zelda,

From this I gather you chose the Model 10 over the Model 15 as mentioned in your other post from this morning. You won't regret it.

And yup, no adj. sights to snag or ding the hands. Besides,
if majority of shooters were realistic they'd admit that their
distances to target are quite small, even considering 25 yards, and adj. sights are never touched despite different loads.

The Model 10 is already zeroed for most practical distances for a handgun and specifically for a .38 Special.

I think you should go back to your original post and let people know what your choice was regarding 10 vs. 15.

I shot it this morning. Great gun. I found shooting it more enjoyable than any of my other Smiths. I do not like the grips and will be buying some replacements. Probably just some Altamonts. After getting it home and looking more into the grips I do believe they are real pearl. Any idea how much they would be worth?

Congratulations as the Model 10-5 are simply awesome revolvers.

Here's a picture of the model 10-5 I got from my Dad before he passed away.
