So I've been back and forth, back and forth, couldn't decide which .22 to buy for a new plinker. Finally choose the S&W 22a yesterday when I saw the one I wanted at a local shop. Went back this morning and picked it up. Here she is:

Went directly home, attached a red dot I had sitting around, picked up a few things, ammo, range bag, etc. and headed down to the shooting club to try and break it in. (This pistol is for the bowling pin shoots there this summer!) Beautiful day even though a little chilly.

I loaded up the mag and went to work. 4 rounds down range and the mag pops out. I put it back in, fire again, comes back out!! I fired the next 5 rounds with it coming out after one or two shots. Very discouraged I loaded it back up, ran fine the next 15-16 mags, or about 150-160 rounds total. After that first time through no more problems. No jams, no FTF, no FTE, ALL GOOD!!!!!!!! I put probably 120 rounds of CCI mini mags (HP) through first and another 40 or so of some older Federal bulk (non HP). Both worked well with no hiccups.

I will say that this gun is going to be plenty accurate for my plinking purposes. With the red dot and rested my hands on bench I was able to put 10 shots inside 1.5" at 20 yds. I'm sure this could be improved. I don't know how long this red dot will last on the gun, i'm not positive i like it. I've got my eyes on a Sightmark Reflex holo, but i'll see how this works for now.

Any other scope/red dot suggestions??

Nice !!!! I was at the range last week with a guy with a new 22A and he had a few problems with the first few mags and then it ran good. Teething problems I guess.

I like the looks of that. Picked mine up today, runs smooth as silk and has a great trigger pull. The only problem I'm having is it shoots about 2" high at 50'. Elevation is adjusted all the way down. Not to happy with that part, I hate to put an optics sight on it. :( Did you shoot yours with the iron sights before you put the Red Dot on it.

No I gotta admit I did not. I took the gun outside when i bought it and kinda gave the sights a once over. The front sight is so fat it more or less made a solid line when lined up with the back sight. I didn't care for it too much, I personally would like the front sight to be thinner (if this makes sense) and i'd paint it white/red/orange

I will at some point try it with no optics, just haven't yet. I'm not very accurate with iron sights, (not enough practice) and was planning some kind of red dot, i'm just not 100% sure this red dot i'm using will be the one.

Congratulations on a nice little pistol. I've never owned a 22A but have heard good things about them from those who do.

I was watching the guy next to me shoot one about a week ago at the range.

He made a little hole in the center of the target and then shot several boxes through that hole.

I might have to get one!

Cabela's (here in Missouri at least) has the 22A on sale currently for $199.00 if anyone is looking for one. I have to wait a bit before bringing any more guns home or i would be in line to get one, lol!

You should like it. Mine was really nice. ordered a 7" barrel and a Halo dot site was shooting it and the recoil channel that holds the spring blew apart so it's at S&W getting fixed. very nice shooter and sure it will be when I get it back. I was upset because things like that happen to other people not me.LOL. I do understand things happen so now I will have to live with it.

That's why god invented layaway ! Shoo

Finally got to the range

Since the bad weather, I haven't been able to shoot at home, but today I was able to finally fire my newly acquired model 22a lr and I couldn't be happier.

I had expected some growing pains, but I put about 300 rounds thru it without a hiccup of any kind and I was using the cheap Wally world federal ammo.

The only thing, it shoot consistency 2 inches high at 15 yards, but that'll just require a little sight adjustment. It was very accurate.

I couldn't have been more satisfied with right otta the box shooting.

I have never had a problem with mine and I use Wally World el cheapo bricks in mine. I would like to get a set of the grips with the thumb rest, anyone wanna sell me some (or even trade?)
