My "new" 27-2 [pics]

I posted a few days ago in my "WTB 27-2" thread that I'd gotten a line on a local gun. I went to look at it today. It turned out to be a 8-3/8" gun and I was looking for a 6". But...the condition blew me away. It's 99+. Looks like it's been fired very, very little. I was surprised at just how well the long barrel balances. And the price was right, so I got it.

There isn't a scratch or blemish on it anywhere. The finish is flawless, as is the topstrap and rib checkering.

Congratulations. Great looking gun. I also have a 27-2 with 8.375" barrel. I was just like you. I wanted either a 5" or 6" gun. When I saw the condition of mine, I bought it. I sure have enjoyed shooting the one that I have.

Great looking gun in fine shape, they are still out there in mint shape it just shows to be patient and they will come along. Congrats on a nice find!

Unlike the 29 and 57 with their heavier barrels, the 27 with the long tube really doesn't feel muzzle heavy at all. I find that it points well and handles nicely. You also get top performance from Magnum loads. I have one in nickel and I like it very much. Of course I never met a 27 I didn't like.

Great looking 27, I found a 8 3/8 unfired nib also. By all means leave the Target grips, that's a great looking set.

The thing about that barrel is you don't have to get close enough to shoot them you just hit them in the head with that barrel....

I also have a 27-2 8 3/8. It feels great but I still can't bring myself to shoot. The guy I bought from had it for over 20 years and did not shoot it.
I also bought a 29-2 8 3/8 from the same person and both came with presenstation boxes.
I would like to some day come across a 17 in 8 3/8?

Circa '86 or so, I got this (my Dirty Harry days):

BUT it was too much gun and became a safe queen. So I saw this, sold the other and bought this.

But it was so pretty I couldn't take it upon myself to shoot it (you know, the front of the cylinder gets blackened), so I shoot this. I sense my thinking is off!!

By the way, SaxonPig is spot on when he says the 29 8 3/8" is muzzle heavy but the 27 8 3/8" is not. The guns almost look the same but the feel is way different. I personally like the 'hang' of the 8 3/8" mdl 27.

I shot mine last week for the first time in a few years. It does balance and shoot very well. It shoots pretty good too.

While I have never liked the 'fit' of the Smith target stocks (too fat at the bottom to allow a good purchase with magnum calibers), I would have to disagree that it will look better. JMHO.

I would also have to agree with your disagreement. everyone knows nothing looks better than a set of Pachmayrs.

Congratulations! Your 27 will provide years of shooting pleasure, I am fortunate to own a couple myself. One with 8 3/8" and another with a 5inch bbl. Leave on the Target stocks they just go together.
