I won a 3914 on Gunbroker on Monday ($275), my FFL had it on Wednesday, I picked it up yesterday, and was at the range today. My previous 9 was a shield.

Let me tell you, I love it! I find it much better to shoot than the shield - much less snappy. Only about 4 oz heavier when loaded. I think i'm going to be selling my shield. The DA trigger is so smoooooth (and soooo long!) The shield trigger is very gritty in comparison. Hopefully I can put that money down on a CS9 if I can find one.

Meanwhile, the firing pin on the shield broke somehow. I call Smith to get a replacement (which they are sending me no questions asked) and asked the guy when my 3914 was built - he says it was 1989.

I put about 100 rounds through it, of varying quality. I did get one FTE with my cheap wolf ammo. Not sure what may have caused it. Other than that it was fine. I shot much better with it than I have with the shield.

I bought a shield to possibly replace my 3913. After shooting if for a couple of weeks I sold it. For me the 39** series is a perfect CCW pistol. Off topic, as a 3rd Gen guy, the M&P 2.0's are growing on me and I hate to admit it. Loving my 2.0 5" 9mm and just ordered the new 2.0 Compact Friday. As cooler weather arrives the 2.0's might replace my 4566/4026 winter carry options.

Congrats on your find, & at a good price too!

My 3914 is now my only 9mm. It does everything I need from it & the only load I handload for it performs flawlessly. What more could you ask for? A great little pistol.

Glad you're liking yours!

Gave my son my Shield 9mm. He's not so particular but is a damned good shooter. Nothing wrong with it, but prefer my 3914 NL for carry. LOL

Glad you like your new 3914, IMO it is the ideal carry gun. Sorry to hear you had a FTE though, could easily be the cheap wolf ammo. Personally, I stick to brass-cased ammunition for anything other than an AK, I have heard that the steel-cased stuff can be problematic for extractors. A new recoil spring is also an excellent $2 preventative maintenance measure for any new 'used' S&W 3rd Gen, and is in stock at Midway.

I handled a newer S&W semi. Didn't like the feel or the trigger. I longed for a 39 or 59 that I had back in the 70s. I found a mint 6904 on consignment at a LGS with 5 mags for $300. As soon as I picked it up and tried the trigger I knew it was going home with me. The first gen and third gen Smiths are better than the new ones. S&W should take a long look and bring them back. My next one might be the CS series if I can find one.
