I posted this picture the other day in a different thread, so my excuses in advance for repeating myself a little bit. However, I really want to talk about this gun.

I found it at a local shop a couple of weeks ago and paid slightly less than $400 for it, out the door. It was filthy but everything checked out. A couple of hours of elbow grease removed what looked to be years of grime and dirt, exposing a gun that shows some honest wear but no major flaws. The gun will never win any beauty contest, but as a defensive sidearm it is just about perfect. It's not heavy and fits perfectly into my Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake holster. It will be my constant walk in the mountains sidekick.

What a shooter this gun is! It has a fantastic trigger, both in da and sa, and locks up very tightly. At 10 yards it shoots to POA with 158gr. .38s and about 3" low with lighter weight bullets. It's wonderfully accurate. On my first trip to the range I was able to put about 70 rounds into an area smaller than the palm of my hand at 10 yards, shooting only double action offhand.

I've purchased some Buffalo Bore short barrel 150gr. Wadcutter as my defensive ammo.

I'm going into all of this detail because I highly recommend it as a defense/carry piece and because, apparently, there are many of them up for sale in the $350-400 price range. For my money, the gun's simplicity, its high quality function, and its great accuracy make it a perfect defensive sidearm. I bought mine locally and it has no police markings on it, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was a police trade-in. However, I've noticed that several of the online sites, like Gunbroker and Guns America, carry this model as a trade in-from the California Department of Corrections.

Looks good, congrats.

I missed a real nice one about 3 years ago at a local large gun show. $400, private sale. I have looked for that one ever since. Well I finally hit the 64 jackpot. A fellow SWCA Member contacted me with a 1981 LNIB/papers/tools 64 that I will pick up 2 days after my 64th birthday! A 64 for 64. I can't wait.

That is a great gun. I have been trying to find one for a while. I had a fellow board member put me onto a nice one but it was bought before I could get it. I have seen the CDC ones, but I don't like marked guns. I ended up with a 2" Model 10 and then a 2" Model 12. Congrats on finding that gun!

your S&W model 64-2 is a fine revolver and a good choice for SD with wadcutter ammo.

I took advantage of the influx of CDC marked Model 64's and picked up a reasonably priced 64-2 a couple of weeks ago. After swapping the dinged up service stocks for some Pachmayer Compacs I hit the range. Like other K frames in my modest collection it was smooth and very accurate...

I bought two Model 64s this summer, a four inch and a RB two inch. Both in the box with tools, unfired. The four inch for $300.00 and the two inch for $350.00 if I remember right.

I have a RB, two inch Model 64 that from CDNN several years ago that is maked "CDC" on the left side of the frame under the cylinder. It has the best double action and single action trigger pull of any S&W Revolver that I have and that was about 70 revolvers last time I counted.

Don't know what CDC means on the 64.

Rule 303

Congratulations on the purchase of your Model 64 as they are great revolvers.

I've been thinking about the Ahrends. Mine came with these enormous Pachmyr grippers. I happened to have some Uncle Mike's K-frame round butt boot grips in my grip drawer so I put them on the gun. I really like them, the rubber covers the backstrap and it makes shooting this gun about as challenging as shooting my 617. I think that they're about perfect for a defensive handgun.

My other snub is a 19-3. It has a nickel finish in excellent condition and comes with the factory round butt service grips. I'm debating whether to order a pair of Ahrends for that gun, in order to give me something a little more substantial to hold on to. Of course, Uncle Mike's (if I could find them) would work great on that gun, too, but the 19 is just too pretty for rubber grips!

There were a bunch of California Department of Corrections 64-2s for sale priced at $390. This was not one of them. I wish I'd kept it.

Gents, I have a friend that is wanting to sell me his 64-1 4" pinned NIB. I have no idea of value of this that would be fair to us both. Help me out here please. I have not seen the gun but I am sure that it will be Nib.

Thanks
Bill

Ah, an excuse to show off my 4" RB 64-5 circa 1997. $350 security co. trade in from LGS. Polished the scratches out. Excellent accuracy. The haze on the barrel is condensation - I didn't let it 'warm up' before I took the pic.
