After completing some errands last week on my lunch break I decided I would reward myself with a quick trip to my LGS before heading back to the drudgery of work. I had (oddly) been doing a ton of research recently on new model 629 and 629 classics in an effort to decide between the two for my first .44 magnum revolver.

Lo and behold, sitting in the glass display case was a 6" Model 29-2 for $599 w/ holster, just shy of 100 rounds of .44 Magnum, original box, original cleaning kit (never been used) and original papers! My jaw just about hit the floor and shortly thereafter I walked out with a giant new box under my arm.

The gun was quite dirty and the holster was in bad shape (looks like the guy carried quite often) but both cleaned up nicely. I personally find the Pachmayr grips to be atrocious and already have my check in the mail to Kim Ahrends for a set of retro combats.

I have yet to take her to the range but I am thoroughly excited since I have only shot .44 Magnums once before. However, I couldn't wait to post a picture until the grips arrived so here she is!

Nice find! You will love it. Glad to hear you are taking the "tires" off. I just do not like rubber grips, but that is just me. Congrats on the find!

That is a beautiful Model 29-2 and you got a very good deal!! Go ahead and shoot it with those Pachmayr rubber grips on it. I use them to shoot all my magnum handguns (well more than a dozen or so and have at least 8 44mag. revolvers) and tame the recoil as good as any around. Show and store it with the Ahrends as it does look so much better with them installed.

Nice find at a good price.

I agree...you got a nice find for a very good price. I don't care for the looks of the rubber grips much either, but they are comfortable to shoot with IF they fit your hand. Proper fit in terms of trigger reach is really the key in my opinion to comfortably shooting magnums (you do NOT want it recoiling against your proximal thumb joint which it will do if the reach is too long and you have to shift your grip.) Depending on the size of your hands/fingers you want to choose a grip that seats the backstrap well into the web of your hand and still allows the trigger to contact the first joint ("power crease") of your index trigger finger. Appropriate size is a lot more important than material (wood vs rubber) for shooting comfort I think!

That was a super deal on a great revolver so congratulations.

This is exactly why I am trying to switch the grips. It feels clunky and awkward in my hand just in dry firing with snap caps! I can't imagine I would handle the recoil well with a full magnum load and the Pachmayrs on. If I were to stay with rubber grips, I would go with a Hogue.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. I couldn't be happier.

Nice find and welcome to the forum. Actually, I have fired a lot of rounds through a 29 using those exact same grips and I found they worked better than Hogues.

Interesting. Perhaps I will have to try them both then! I am honestly just partial to wood grips - I have a set of Hogue rosewood round-butt grips on my 686+ that I love. I'm looking forward to seeing if I can handle the .44 magnum recoil with wood grips. If not then I will honestly appraise any alternative.

Do you guys do most of your shooting out of your 29's/.44's with specials or magnums?

Welcome to the forum, And congratulations on a nice 29-2

Mostly magnums, but if I am carrying it for self defence (other than in the woods) I keep it stoked with 200 grain hollow points.

And another vote for the goodyears if you're shooting the magnums.

Oh dont get me wrong I love wood grips, but those Pach's are pretty decent if you are loading rhino stoppers. I reload and my std load is 7gr IMR700X with a cast 240gr bullet. Runs about 1000fps but mild enough to shoot all day.
