I just picked up my brand new 1 lb. can of SR4756. My supplier carries lots of all kinds stuff but not this powder and he had to special order it just for me. I bought it specifically for loading stout .38 Special, 9mm and .45 ACP. I am not fortunate enough to own a Speer #8 but I am well educated in this powder's use in the .38 Special. Call it the notoriety, if you will. I hear it is also a good candidate for 9mm and .45 ACP and I'd like some good starting suggestions, if anybody has some. I am most interested in 124 gr. jacketed bullets in a 940 and 255 gr. cast bullets in a 625. Barrel lengths are 2" and 3". Any advice will be appreciated.

David,

Since the ACP will use the same data in a revolver, here's the Auto Rim section of Speer #8.

There are several manuals, not complete except for the Herter's book, you can select from here, but it's mostly handgun data and heavy on .38/.357. You can click on the images for bigger size, but a second click will take it back to the original size.

Thanks for posting the link to the website for the old manuals. I shoot the .38/.357 a lot but the .45 Auto Rim and .45 Colt get some attention too.

I have loaded the 255 gr LSWC from Oregon Trails (Laser Cast) with 7.0 gr of SR 4756 and got 860 fps (instrumental). The OT bullet seats very deep, so pressure and velocity are higher than when using different bullets with less seating depth.

The 230 gr Golden Saber (a low drag bore riding bullet) with the same load only produces 810 fps (instrumental), which partially indicates the validity of my comment on seating depth.

Thanks for the info. So far I have been using mostly 231 and Power Pistol. When the weather warms up I hope to chrono Power Pistol and SR4756 out of the 3" barrel. Another consideration is muzzle flash, but I don't see how anything can be much worse than Power Pistol in that regard.

And then there's that nice .38 Special load I have yet to try...

David,

IMR published several SR4756 loads in 9mm. Here is a page from 2005 manual which you may find useful.

Same loads were repeated in IMR and Hodgdon 2007 printed manuals. FWIW, Hodgdon web site today shows significantly reduced charge for this load - I have no idea why...

I am already getting 1160 FPS with the 124 gr. Gold Dot and Power Pistol in the 940. And easy extraction, which is very important in that gun. I did not realize I would be looking at compressed charges with SR4756 in the 9mm.

On second thought, I am loading a bit long since I don't have to worry about feeding from a magazine. Maybe this will work after all!

Hi, all -

I've just ordered a supply of 4756 (couldn't find any Unique). So far, I've found loads for 9mm, .38/.357, .44 spcl, and .45 ACP.

Are there any other calibers that it's particularly suited for? About the only other pistol rounds I shoot with any frequency are .32/20, .38 S&W, and .32 S&W Long.

TIA,

David,

Was that a regular 9mm load or +P? 1160 fps from a 2" bbl sounds high for 9mm. Also, what velocities are you getting with this load in a semiauto?

4756 is a low density powder and it fills small 9mm case pretty good. 7 grains will fill the case almost to the mouth. I didn't like loading it on a progressive press - spills a lot of powder.

I don't own any semiautos but I have done quite a bit of reloading for a Glock 19. The load I use in my 940 could probably be considered +P, and if I recall my load is higher than published maximum. But then I load long and don't have to worry about rounds fitting into a magazine. As long as fired cases extract freely from the gun I figure I should be OK. On the other hand, I was given some Cor-Bon factory loads of unknown bullet weight (I think it's very light) that will lock up the cylinder after one or two shots. It's marked +P+ and the fired cases need to be pounded out of the cylinder. The combination of Power Pistol and Federal brass works well in the 940.
