My New Model 681

I picked up another retired Police revolver today. I found a 681 no dash for $250.00 that had been used to protect one of the north suburbs of Denver for many years. She was pretty rough, but two hours with Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish seems to have helped.

The serial number is ACM05xx. If anyone knows when this was made, I would greatly the help.

I had some questions about some of the other stampings. On the frame where the cylinder crane mates up against, it is stamped 'Model 681' only.

On the arm that holds the cylinder and swings out ( forgive me for not remembering what this part is called - is it the yoke? ) has the following numbers stamped; '37545', and just above that in larger font is 'E2'.

I don't see an 'M' anywhere, and was wondering if this model was affected by the recall several years ago? I'm just wondering if S&W would still honor the recall?

My guess for the DOB is mid to late 1983. And yes, the 581 no dash is included in the recall. To the best of my knowledge S&W is still honoring the recall and paying shipping cost both ways.

By the way, that is a real beauty of an "L" frame. Congrats on a nice find.

The 681 is a nice gun to own, I would like to find one for a shooter. All I have is a NIB 681, the label on it is wrong

My first L frame was a 681, I got it in 1984 or 1985, I never had any problems with it, so I never sent it back. I carried it for many years & really enjoyed it. I now have a 586 with no M & it shoots great & with full magnum rounds & tons of medium loads.

anybody ever seen a 681 in kind of a gray finish..its not duracoat i checked that.
its a lot like ruger target gray.

Even though we have little to no extra money, I would knock the wife down to take her credit card to buy one for $250! Very nice gun, I've wanted a 681 for a long time.

That serial # indicates 1983 according to my SCSW. At $250 you stole that gun.

Yes that is the yoke (on a S&W anyway.

Per the SCS&W:
"What Colt calls a crane, S&W calls a yoke."

Those other numbers were just used to keep the parts together during production. As far as the lack of an "M", I agree with the previous statement that if it works fine, why send it back?

Very nice find for $250.00. The M681 is a sleeper that is getting to be popular with many members here. I got mine for $359.95. When I found it I was looking for a M686 and a M10 HB. I got both in one gun and love it. How ever if I find a nice M686 or M10 HB it would be hard to pass them up.
