Just picked up my shooter 28-2 with 6" barrel. It is in much better shape than the pictures showed when I bought it. It came with a set of Herret grips that have a 'Coke' shape and feel very good to the hand. Can anyone give me some background on the grips?

Your going to love that HP. It can fire full blown 357 mags for a long time and keep on ticking. Weight of them makes the recoil very manageable.

Herretts are a reasonably priced replacement grip company located in Twin Falls Idaho. Lots of factory magnas went in the trash or stuck drawers and replaced by Herretts. No idea how long they have been around, but, I bought some in the 70s. Search for Herrett grips and you will find their web site.

Congratulations on your find. I myself just picked up a 'new to me' 1978 Model 28 with a 6" barrel. Very minty and came with factory target stocks with the speed loader cutout.

Those grips appear to be Finger Grooved Trooper stocks from what I can tell from Herrett's website. I've not had the opportunity to handle many of Herrett's stocks, but sure would like to. I do have one set of Roper stocks for my Model 27 I had made custom and really like them. I think one of the most often seen set of Herrett's on used guns, are the Shooting Star ones. I've sanded down several used pair to fit my taste and couldn't ask for more.
