Found this at my LGS this weekend. I had no idea what it was. After some education by the shop clerk and some web search, I bought it. It fills the spot in my armory for a S&W .357MAG! Plan on shooting it this week. It's a 1984, per SW Customer Service.

It has the "M" stamp for the recall fix. It doesn't have any markings for the agency it was issued to. So not sure where this specific piece comes from.

The crane has "S", "B4" and 2 sets of numbers stamped over each other, pic attached. One side of the frame has the "S", "B4", one of the sets of numbers that are also on the crane and "F45". The other side has a "D" inside a circle, "B" inside a triangle and another set of numbers stamped over each other. Any idea what those are?

Can't wait to shoot it!

Congrats, that's a great revolver! I miss the one I once had as a duty gun. It wasn't my first handgun, but it was the one on which I first learned to shoot accurately.

Congratulations on a nice looking 681!

Can someone tell a little more about the narrow hammer that this has? I recently saw a 581 with a similar narrow hammer and was curious about it. Normally, I see the slightly wider (with a flared area for thumb purchase) on 581/681/586/686 revolvers.

Nice score!

That hammer is a ".265" Service Hammer". Usually found on fixed-sight revolvers, along with "Service" (Magna) stocks.
My 681 is the same (except the stocks):

Their adjustable sighted brethren (586 and 686) were normally issued with a ".375" Semi-Target Hammer".
