Today I finally took possession of a Model 66-1 that I have been chasing for awhile. It is a 2.5 " version and is marked "LA STATE FIRE MARSHAL".
It seems the state had 14 of them in its vault and decided to trade them off. I knew I had to have one and finally traded for the one I got.
The serial number is 80K34XX.
While I have seen Smiths marked for Police Departments, Sheriffs Departments and State Police, I have never seen one marked for a fire marshal before. They were carried by the Arson Division of the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's office.
I apologize for the poor quality picture. Wish I had a better camera for up close work
I hope to take it to the range in the next few days and feel that wonderful Smith & Wesson action.

NEAT!!!

That is really, really neat!!! Very unique LE marked S&W.

Next you need to get some original grips for that little jewel and dump those ugly rubbers! The 66 with 2 1/2 inch tube has always been my favorite revolver!

Wow - very nice (and unusual) find. Wish I could come across something like that.

Let us know what you think after your range trip.

I agree w/ slowburninsteve - dump the ugly rubbers.
I'll never understand why someone would do that.

It's like dating the prom queen in sweats after rolling her in the manure pile! YUCK!

Today the gun club had a seminar on instinctive shooting. I figured taking it and using this pistol would be a good chance to see how it shoots. The pistol did very well. I was quite pleased how I did with it and how it shot. The double action felt very smooth. I even let several others shoot it and they enjoyed the experience too. I believe it will make me a very good carry piece and defensive weapon. I even shot several magnum rounds through it and managed to hit just fine with them. If it is not raining tomrrow afternoon I might go backand try some bullseye shooting with it. Right now I am very happy with it.

That's a "gotta' have" S&W, a Mod 66.

Why in the world would a fire marshal need a gun !?!

I wonder if LA armed it's agriculture commissioner too!

There is a division of the Fire Marshal's Office thats charged with dealing with the crime of arson and associated crimes. They are specialized law enforcment officers. They are a small department but make a good many arrests every year.
Also there is a group in the agriculture department that is armed. They are the livestock brand commission. They deal with cattle theft and such.

Nice 66-1 2.5". I know because I have one.

It is the one gun in my inventory I will never sell. It fits my hands perfectly and I shoot it oh so very well. It just feels right. :D

I agree. Mine is my everyday CCW gun. Have original wood grips with a Tyler T-grip. Took the gun to Front Sight for the four day defensive handgun class. She did very well as the only revolver on the firing line. Excelled in the "Failure to fire/Failure to extract" drills.

Nice! I have a dash-2 on lay-away though I'm pretty sure I paid more than market value, but the action was soOoo nice I just had to have it.
