My Pre -29

Lately, We have had the Grail Tales.
The first early Smith 44 Magnum that I actually handled belonged to a guy in CO. The 44s were in all the magazines, but not in any gun stores or Shows that I went to!
So it was a ways down the road and I had a table at a Ruidodo Gun Show.
I’m walking around looking.
And what do I see?
A pre-29!
I try not to act too interested.
I ask, how much?
The seller says, I don’t really want money.
Say what?
Everybody wants money!
I dont!
What do you want?
I want a Browning Cirori.
I don’t have one of those.
That guy over there has one. But he won’t trade for my Smith.
Oh ****!
So if I buy the Browning, you will take it even for the Smith?
Yes!
So with a big feeling of uncertainty, I bought the Browning.
And got my 44 Magnum.
It reminded me of the Jack London Story about the folks who found the huge pearl.
When the pearl buyer tried to buy it, they wanted - things, not money.

In case you don’t want to read the story, this is what the pearl divers wanted-

"I want a house," Mapuhi went on. "It must have a roof of galvanized iron and an octagon-drop-clock. It must be six fathoms long with a porch all around. A big room must be in the centre, with a round table in the middle of it and the octagon-drop-clock on the wall. There must be four bedrooms, two on each side of the big room, and in each bedroom must be an iron bed, two chairs, and a washstand. And back of the house must be a kitchen, a good kitchen, with pots and pans and a stove. And you must build the house on my island, which is Fakarava."

"Is that all?" Raoul asked incredulously.

"There must be a sewing machine," spoke up Tefara, Mapuhi's wife.

"Not forgetting the octagon-drop-clock," added Nauri, Mapuhi's mother.

"Yes, that is all," said Mapuhi.
