Well it seems that lighting my fire for Smith & Wesson revolvers was seemingly ignited by my acquisition of my 66-1 K frame. I have been searching for some of the recommendations of you nice guys and had made up my mind on a .357 Mod 27 or 28 with no luck. I've been trying to find one locally and there has been no one beating my door down. When, out of the blue, I find a guy who is selling a 629-1 .44 Mag 6" for $500. Now I'm not really in the market for a "Make My Day Gun" but for $500 I can get in the market for it. Doesn't that sound like a good deal to you experts out there? I have tentatively made a deal with him. All that's left is either driving to get it or have it sent to an FFL. It looks fantastic. Somebody tell me I'm making a good deal.

Now, to my basic question. I'm never ever shot a .44 Mag but it looks as if I'm going to. How about some suggestions for some MILD .44 Special rounds to take it to the range with? What should I buy? And as long as we're on the subject how about somebody's favorite SD round in .44 Special. There seems to be so many choices in .44 Mag so just so I could at least say I've shot some, what would be a good SD round in .44 Mag? Is there any such thing as a .44 Mag loaded down so low that you could actually take it to the range and still come out with a useable hand? Believe me, I don't know anything about a .44Mag. But, I don't think I should pass up this deal waiting on someone to dump a 27 or 28 in my lap. What are you guys feelings?

Attached is a picture of my find. I'm excited, real excited.

Hi,
I shoot a Winchester .44 Special cowboy action shooting round that is very mild. It comes in a brown antique style box. I would recomended this for a very low recoil round. I think CCI may still make a .44 Spl alum blazer round. I suspect you may also enjoy shooting Magnums with that gun Enjoy your new gun.

.44 mag is not that bad. Just takes a little practise and time to
get good with it just like everything else. Don't be scared off by
the "Dirty Harry" thinking. My advise would be to get a box of both
.44 specials and .44 mag and shoot both to see which you are comfortable with. Keep a firm grip and you'll be fine. Nice looking
629 by the way. Can't go wrong at 5 bills if it's tight.

Both Remington and Winchester load the traditional 246 gr LRN at about 750 fps. This is really quite a mild load, and if you're well accustomed to full-throttle .357, should be no trouble at all for you to shoot well. PMC & Federal offer loads a bit above those, but still quite easy-shooting. And, of course the various "cowboy" loads from several sources are even lighter.
You didn't ask, but I'll recommend that you shoot up several boxes of .44 Spl to familiarize with your new iron before trying some full-power .44 Mag. Shooting big-bore revolvers is mucho fun-o, but can be daunting if you dive into the "deep end" first. Please do keep us posted.
And BTW, if you're not a handloader, the .44s can easily make you one.

Thanks guys. I was planning on trying some mild .44Specials first before even attempting to graduate to any Magnum loads. I really had no thoughts on a 629 but the thoughts are beginning to intrigue me now.

44mag

Suggest that first time you shoot a full load 44 mag that you load only ONE in the cylinder. Some people double fire, drop, scream, holler , run away.

Call 1-800-622-4366 ext 110 ask for Mike or Dave. I am Mike and usually at that desk. I would be very happy to discuss light to medium loads for the 44 Mag or the 44 Spl.

We do a great deal of work for this sort of thing and have a great time doing it.

The 629-1 is an excellent choice, and for $500 it looks good in the picture. Be sure to take your time and check out the lock-up, timing, barrel, frame, cylinder, and cylinder gap. Shooting 44 specials is great fun and a fine way to get started reloading.
