My S&W snubs

My two snub nose revolvers by S&W.
A 1966 made blued Model 36-1 and my frequent carry Model 642-1.
Both reliable shooters but the 36-1 lives most of its life in the safe these past few years alongside my old 1958 Colt Detective Special

Hello JagD,
I actually have these two guns myself and they even sport the same altamont grips from time to time. I have a tendency to constantly swap my grips around, its a problem for me!
Anyways, you have two great pieces, two great snubs from two different eras of S&W.

Your photo does not include a Model 36-1, which was a 3" Chiefs Special (not a 2"), and the 36-1, which originated in 1966, didn't have a flat latch thumb piece.

Here are 2 of mine. They are 7 serial numbers apart, and may have been shipped to the same location from the factory. The blued one is well used, but the nickel one is primo.

Personally , I would carry the 36. It is a much better shooter than the alloy derivative.

how do you like the Altamonts? Thinking of getting some for my 37

The Altamonts are great grips; comfortable and easy to control.
I still keep the original grips for both guns.
The Model 36 grips are original to the pistol so I keep them in the safe with the pistol.
When target shooting the Airweight I go with the original rubber grips because they absorb much of the recoil which really counts when occasionally firing +P rounds.

The 36 is a much better shooter than the Airweight because the heavier steel makes it a more comfortable shooter.
However, due to the nature of my work, the Airweight is easier to CC here in the humidity and heat.
The wide mouth hollow points I load chamber in it better than they do in the 36.

A couple of great snubs!!! Thanks for sharing. I too have a 36 and a 642. I've shot both, and the 642 is no fun to shoot, even with mild .38 Specials and some nice Ahends grips. That said, it weighs almost nothing and I find myself slipping it into my pocket for a quick concealed carry trip here and there.





They are fun little guns.

I tried J snubs, and was not satisfied. So, bought a 10-5 snub. Not so pretty, but a good price & shooter. Needed another, and found a 66-2 at the local gun show. Had to have it! Big improvements to me! Bob

I find longer barrels more enjoyable to shoot, that being said, "snubs" do have a certain appeal.
