I brought home to the ranch my first center fire auto and it was in 9mm double stack magazine. Unfortunately it jammed frequently and I passed it on to get an SW 19 with Goncalo Alves 6" barrel.
I knew the SW39 was popular and to me that was fine I like the 39 whenever I can see one. The 59 story soured me and left me out of the SW realm for about 10 years and then I got my first S 41 and everything sour went to extremely sweet.
I guess I can say I had a bad story about one gun and never owned the same model again. I was really young then.
I confess I have Colts too but that's because I like the Colt in Single Action Army and I like the Smith and Wesson Double Action in 29 best.
Add the SA pull of the best DA revolver (29) then there's no way Colt can win every time.

I'm always amazed by people who buy a new gun, have trouble with it, then just dump it. They don't do that with a Car or Computer or house or washing machine. Why not let the maker fix it?

I would guess you could now find a well-sorted model 59 or later variant that would feed everything - your old one may have had an ammo or magazine issue.

That was a long time ago the 59 had a problem but they worked it out . I have a 459 FBI gun with the matt finish and its flawless . The first ones did jam with the 59.

59

I bought my first 59 in the mid 70's....I still have it. I have owned several 59's, shot thousands of rounds through them over a period of years, primarily hand loads with lead bullets. I never had any issues with any of them. I also had the opportunity to handle, shoot, maintain and instruct officers on hundred's of 2nd gen and 3rd gen S&W DA/SA's over a period of years.....I have also had the same opportunity with Sig's, HK's, Berettas and Glocks. I learned not to judge a particular firearm based on one example, I occasionally encountered one that was a "problem child", might be one out of 30 or 50 or 100 guns....I have also seen many occasions where a pistol would not run well with one shooter, then somebody else could pick it up and shoot it and it would run flawlessly.
There are a lot of variables when working with pistols: tolerances, ammo, mag's, shooters technique, new gun needing to be broke in, etc.

A few of my 1st and 2nd Smith 9`s had problems. Ammo changes, more power, cured them.
