Over the past 2 or 3 years I have been wanting some revolvers in different calibers that I could use for target shooting. I wanted them to all have 6 inch barrels so they would balance the same. I finally located and purchased 4 revolvers and then did some modifications to make them shoot better for me. I disassembled each one and polished the internal parts with very fine emery cloth. When reassembling each one I replace the rebound slide spring with Wolff 11 lb reduced power springs. I also replaced the mainspring with Wolff Type 2 reduced power mainsprings. I installed Pachmayr gripper grips on each gun. And lastly I installed SDM new style thumbpieces on each revolver so I can more easily open the cylinder without changing my grip on the gun. I'm enjoying shooting these and they do balance very similar. The model 25 being an "N" frame does weigh more than the other 3 "K" frames, but they all shoot very accurately.
In the photo, from L to R, and top to bottom are:
Model 17-2, 22 long rifle
Model 48-4, 22 WMR
Model 25-2, 45 ACP
Model 19-4, .357 magnum
Sure would like to pick up a model K32 in S&W 32 long, but at $4,000 that's just not in the cards.
I also picked up a S&W M&P 38 special 5-screw, 6 inch barrel (call a "pre-10" by some), and a 1942 made "Victory model" in 38 S&W that got nickel plated somewhere along the way, and added them to my collection.
But I sure do like the 4 target shooters!
