My UUUUGLY Model 28-2-Update on Post #57

I walked into the local gun store this afternoon and the owner immediately began trying to sell me on a Model 28-2 he had just put up for sale today. Appearance wise, it really looks bad, but on the inside, this gun is literally like new! Bottom line, I walked out of the store with the gun for a total price of $433.00, y'all are free to express your opinions on whether or not I got skinned.

This is a 1978 issue, according to its serial number, N52891#.

Looks to me like you got yourself a good shooter grade 28. You can go out out in the field and not worry about damaging the finish. And that is a good price nowadays for an N frame P&R 357 Mag.

I'd buy it at that price and convert it to 41, 44, 45lc or acp ,etc...anyday.

I think this will alleviate your fear that you spent too much. With a $433 OTD budget try to find a better adjustable sighted .357 shooter for a person who does not give a hoot what the gun looks like. I do not think you will find many. Mechanical condition as good as new is worth a lot to practical people.

On the other hand my father used to say after you buy quit shopping. Finding what you just bought on sale next week will not make you happier.

Not that ugly IMO. Plenty pretty enough to shoot and carry with no worries about more holster wear. I got this one in just slightly better shape for right about the same price. Shoots great and for the money I couldn't be happier.

Looks like a little surface rust. Should clean up OK and be a great shooter.

Very nice gun, with some minor finish issues. Remember that they will never make a gun like this again. No "lock" marring its appearance, pinned and recessed, a stout working gun, and a reliable partner in the woods, for less than one of the current lot.

What with all the flooding and hurricane damage this season I'd probably pull the sideplate and check the inside workings. Just to be safe. And at that price I'd buy it also. Frank

Shoot the snot out of it. Than if you want send it to S&W for a refinish down the road. There was a post a few days ago some one sent a revolver into S&W and for about $250 it came back like new. End of the day you'll still only have $683 in the gun.

There's already manufacturers whose very purpose is to provide the near-perfect truck and tractor niche gun.
Providing all the endearment that a leaf-blower would give, and as easily replaced as a shovel.
Taurus and Glock.

Even a worn M28 is too special a piece of S&W history to be relegated to that duty, and not all that easy to replace.

I'd have to agree with these two quotes. I don't think the new S&Ws are that bad, but there are indeed differences.

1.) That is our God given right to disagree.

2.) Many of the newer guns will fill the bill as described. However, most cost more than this piece cost. Also I am not interested in plastic guns and have never liked copy pieces.

3.) A worn M28 is a good find. I think a special one would be an NIB piece. Remember these were meant to be working pieces. I would think most should be worn, from use. It is no longer a "collectible" to the collector crowd. Even with a refinish by S&W if will not be considered collectible.

Yes, I would use this as a truck/car gun. Would I use my 98% M27-2 as a truck/car gun?......No. However, in the condition this gun is in I would use it for it's intended purpose..........as a working gun in defense of my self and others. If that is wrong, then I am sorry.
