So, I decided it was time for his first firearm.
Picked him up a stainless Ruger 10/22.
Popped on a cheap simmons blazer scope I got on my savage.
Will be giving it to him with a cleaning kit, soft case, bags to shoot it off of, shooting glasses, ear plugs...
He lives with his mother who is fairly anti gun... but I talked with her and its going in the safe at her place.
If he is even HALF as excited as I am... this will be an amazing gift.

I got my 13 year old son a .357 Marlin lever rifle for Christmas. he also lives with his mother. I kept the gun at my place. We went and shot it today. You made a good choice. It will give you more time together. This weekend was not my weekend but his mother let him go with me anyway. Good times.

I think I got my first .22 at 14 Yrs old. Back then nobody heard of ear or eye protection. Sound like you're starting him off right. I take it you've had him out shooting before.

He has been shooting my Savage Mako for about 3 years now and does great with it.
I figure that just buying accessories for it covers gifts for the next few years :D

yeah .. and the 10/22 is a hot rod platform too
the goodies list for them is like picking parts for a small block.
yup ... that'll be some gifts in the future

Unreal, I bought my 15 year old grandson a stainless Ruger 10-22 today. He has not seen it yet.

My first gun was a Marlin Model 60... loved it.
I ran across a S&W Model 36 no dash today... beautiful little J, buying the Ruger saved me from buying the J for myself :D

I always enjoy reading about the fathers' and grandfathers' role in introducing the youngsters to firearms. Especially when safety and responsibility are emphasized.

I purchased a NIB Model 63 no dash for my grandson when he was about 9 months old. <smile> He's 6 now and although it will be a few more years, I'm still pretty excited about giving it to him.

Right now, we're still trying to get Mom & Grandma to warm up to the idea of a BB gun!

I can't believe you bought a fourteen year old a first gun...and it wasn't a S&W! However, I hope he enjoys his new rifle and the time he spends with you.

My son's first S&W, given to him nearly eighteen years ago when he was five years old. His first rifle was a Rossi #62 carbine bought the same week.

If he was into pistols, then a Smith would have been in the cards... however he is a crack rifle shot.
His stepfather is an AR buff, and will take him shooting while he is with them... I take him to the range when he is with me.
I see many years of use of the the Ruger.

That will be a gift he will treasure for a lifetime. I still have the Winchester Model 69A bolt action .22 rifle that my dad and I bought when I turned 11 years old. In that same spirit, I have bestowed a couple of 69As on two of my grandkids who expressed an interest in shooting. I hope they'll always remember their first gun and their grandpa who got them started.

Hi:
Sounds like I was "Short-Changed". I was started with a Savage Model 1904 .22 BA Single Shot.
PLUS
My Parents spanked me instead of sending me to "Time Out".
I guess its Their fault I turned out like I did.

My grandson turned 12 in Jan, the legal age for big game hunting in Wyoming. The last couple years he was fit to be tied as he watched me take his older sister hunting.

So, I had this Remington Across the Course gun I never liked the way it shot. So I get a stock, and a ss barrel, and put together his first rifle in 308. Figured he's appreicate one grandpa built him more then a store bought rifle.

Not the best picture but you get the ideal.

If I were home to take him hunting, a .308 would have been looked at.
However, I work on the road and get home for a weekend every 3 weeks... and we live a few hundred miles apart. :(

Only thing I would suggest is, if he is not already versed in sighting, take the scope off until he fully understands how to use open sights.
JMO. My grandsons started out at 4 YOA with a Daisy comp BB gun and moved up to the scoped Ruger 10/22.
Enjoy.

A lot of people now have no clue what iron sights are.
I started off with a Daisy Pal, went to a Marlin Model 60... then got a Tasco scope for that. Then came the Iver Johnson M1C looking .22 with the peep sight.
Then a multitude of open, peep, and scoped on various rifles.
I try to start most people off with iron sights.
