Like some others here, I'm looking for work. Because of the economy and my peculiar circumstances, I can't be too particular. I responded to an ad in the local paper today entitled, "Quality Control; evaluate retail businesses", which included a toll-free number to apply. I called the number and the man who answered provided me with pretty complete information, told me there was a $2.95 registration fee, and was set to take my VISA number. The information all sounded good, and I know that mystery shopping is a genuine and legitimate line of work. Companies hire these outfits to send ordinary folks into their establishments as customers to evaluate customer service, cleanliness, etc., etc. It helps the companies improve the service at their various stores. Anyway, the information was going past me a little too fast, and when it was time to get the card out, I thought, "Whoa! I need to investigate this outfit a little before I give them my number." So I politely told the man I wanted to think about it a little more and thanked him for his time.

Then I checked them out on the BBB website. Three offices were listed; all had street addresses. Unfortunately the BBB had received no information on any of them and so could not rate them.

So I thought I would mention it to you folks and see if anyone had heard of Shopper Systems, or knew anyone who worked for them(I know it's a long shot, but with 50,000+ members, who knows?). I don't mind losing $2.95, but am pretty careful with my credit card number. I had a sister-in-law have her identity stolen a few years ago, and it was a nightmare for her -I can do without that.

As always, thank you for any and all replies.

Typically, they will charge the initial $2.95, then in teeny weeny print they let you know that after 30 days there will be a $39.95 monthly charge for use of their website/services.

Don't do it. Even if it were legit... I have a buddy who did mystery shopping for a legit company... and he put a lot of time and effort in for very little money.

Same here...by the time he did the required paperwork that they required for reporting purposes, his per hour take was minimal.

Thank you, friends. Sounds like I should pass. I guess I was spoiled by working as an editor of the shoppers' reports for a local outfit several years ago. They paid pretty well, as I recall. Too bad there always seem to be counterfeits around.

I've been a mystery shopper for the last eight years and it has never been this slow but good luck searching for work. All the companies I've ever done work for were free try--- JobSlinger - The best mystery shopping resource for finding jobs in retail, restaurants, hospitality, and in-store demonstrations. ---If you receive unemployment remember as a mystery shopper you are not an employee for the company but a contractor and if you make over $600. with them you can get stuck with several 1099's at the end of the year. A plus to these companies you can choose to get paid through PayPal which makes getting paid easier.
