N Frame 629

2moro I'm buying my first revolver ever, and it's gonna be S&W N Frame 629, 6", Half lugged barrel... not sure about the grip material yet, Love the wood... but need the rubber for better grip? not sure!

That's as good a place as any to start, but I'd shoot a lot of 44 Specials before you try the magnums. I'd just try the wood until you learn more about the gun. Hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us.

You really need to try both. There are lots of folks who like wood stocks, yet there's another group equally vociferous for rubber stocks. Hogue and Pachmayr lead the way for rubber, and S&W, Ahrends, and a boatload of others sell wood stocks cut and fitted a number of different ways. Checkering, or lack thereof, finger grooves, wide bottoms, ad infinitum.

In the end, you need to try out several, and find out what fits your hand, and what will be most comfortable for your type of shooting.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but stocks are like shirt colors. Everyone has their own favorites.

Dig around. There are lots of threads on stocks, who makes the best, what fits best, etc.

Get the wood. You can always put aftermarket Hogue's on it later.

I have shot magnums with my 629 with original wood target stocks.

My hands held up fine, but the recoil was snappy, as expected.

Keep a good grip, inhale, pull the trigger, exhale, and you'll be fine.

Pick up a set of Pachs just in case too.

I'm a documented recoil whuss and two days ago I shot full bore 357 thru my wood grip 6 inch 28-2. Recoil was very mild. Unless you are firing crazy 44mag reloads it won't be rough. Loud, but that's the worst part.

I found this grip by gungripsupply.com to be an improvement and as good at handling recoil as rubber, since it has good palm swell and fit, not overly thick. Note that it is for square butt (629-1).
